Fanbuzz

Ok, so I flew on my first airbus a few weeks ago, an A-319, and before I boarded my friend that was with me told me to listen while the engines where at takeoff power for something called Fanbuzz. Well I heard it alright, I think they could hear it in china in fact. Its so loud and, well, alarming. Sounds like the fan is gonna come through the nacelle. Does anyone here know what causes it? Or if it's good or bad?

just ask the mechanic for some anti-fanbuzz spray. they usually keep it next to the propwash.

This sound?

My understanding is it is the sound of the tips of the fan going supersonic.

The CFM engines don't do it (as much). The IAE and PW (on the 318 only) do. I have no idea why though, but the transonic theory sounds plausible.

I just tell people that the rampers are having trouble getting the baggage door open and have had to resort of using a saw.

The CFMs certainly arent as noticeable on the inside, but they certainly are outside. I had a hotel room at the departure end of the runways at Sea-tac a few weeks ago, and the NGs were quite loud on takeoff.

I used to say it was Gary Coleman humping the luggage to keep it warm...

I have to thank Chasen for that one!
