Family history of diabetes

Hi,

I am in the process of applying to become an air traffic controller and have had a relative who had diabetes (my grandfather) I however do not. I have already disclosed this information to the FAA could this be potentially disqualifying? Is it disqualifying even if I were to have diabetes, or is it ok as long as it is monitored closely?

I think it would be illegal to disqualify you for something you don't have, but I could be wrong.

Sorry one last question if that is o.k. what is it about diabetes that makes it disqualifying? Isn't it treatable with insulin or whatever to keep the symptoms at bay?

Remeber, this is also an employment physical. Diabetics have a significant rate of complications and other relasted illnesses. They tend to use the healthcare system at about 5 times the rate of non-diabetics. As an employer, I would want to keep my healthcre costs down and have employees that are not going to end up with heart disease, vision problems and kidney failure.

You may want to start watching your diet, stay away from chips, cookies, & white bread. Learn to start liking the taste of sugar-free stuff, it could help.

Diabetes runs in my family, so, I am Type-2, but, I control it with diet & exercise, monitor my blood sugar & changed my eating/drinking habits.

Do you know how hard it is for an Italian to not eat bread, sheesh:rotfl:

Now that you mentioned it, i should probably start watching my diet. I eat absolutely the worst! Junk food consistently! And dude, with the restaurant we got, i'm always pigging out garlic bread and sauce!

I feel for you pengy and i'm not even italian!
