Falcon Heavy Launch

Ya mean to tell me no one thought of having a boat a couple hundred feet away from the barge landing platform to film another view, when they know all too well that the cameras on the barge itself usually cut out due to heat/vibrations/landing sequence of the central core?

Would you want to be on a boat a couple hundred feet from a rocket that may or may not land on the barge?

I think that's due to the danger of the core landing off target. But.....they have had off barge video of landings before so who knows?

I..., makes me wonder about the sheer power of the Saturn. Especially as I did not get to live those times.
Go to Houston and walk by the Saturn V laying on its side in that massive hangar. Last time I did it they had an older gentleman who had worked in the program standing near the bottom of the first stage telling people all sorts of facts about it. It’s really awe inspiring to stand next to and realize that it’s the most powerful machine man has ever successfully produced, designed in the pre-digital age.

In less than three minutes it took the whole stack from sea level to 50 miles up going 6000 MPH, burning 5 million pounds of fuel - starting around 7 and topping out at shutdown at around 9 million pounds of thrust. Built on nicotine and slide rulers.

We have come a long way, from the early days to the recent days. Good video here, great historical footage, with hero-music soundtrack.

Well, if you want a test ballast load to simulate a Mars-bound vehicle, do you want a little pizzazz or a bunch of sandbags that they use for ballast in a DC-9?

You won't believe what was in the trunk!

(No for real... there was a rumor that once it gets into Mars orbit, the car will drop down to the surface using some sort of parachute system and drive around.)

I suspect that Mr. Musk is crazy like a fox. My read is that he sincerely believes that he can move forward human endeavor a meaningful amount in his lifetime, and he is willing to play the part of the Crazy Billionaire Philanthropist/Nutcase/Evul Genius in order to do so. To wit, Dr. Evil with his volcanic island base sells more interwebz clicks than an inveterate nerd who also happens to have extremely good vision, be committed to what he views as human progress, and have the money to hire all of the Nerd-Beards who make this stuff actually occur. As it happens, I agree with him (in the main) about what constitutes human progress, and I applaud him (and the thousands and thousands of people who made this happen and will make other incredible feats happen in the future). I suspect that in private he would give the lion's share of the plaudits to them, too, but he's too committed to the project to let him being remembered as a self-impressed jerk slow down the Project. So he lets those who would prefer to believe that he's a biiiiiiiiiit of a megalomaniac just go on and believe whatever it is they prefer to believe, so long as the payloads get up the gravity well.

I admit that I could be totally wrong and he could be plotting to take over the world. Gotta hedge my bets.

‘Murcah in a nutshell: “I could give some struggling less fortunate person this car and really change their life, or I could literally shoot it into planetary orbit. Think I’ll shoot it into orbit.”

Give a person a Tesla roadster, they'll bitch about having to charge it.

Inspire a generation of kids, literally change the course of human history.

I heard a rumor that some of Bowies ashes are in the car.
BTW It's never going to reach Mars, it's going to orbit the Sun in a roughly similar orbit as Mars.
