I would like to second that sentiment. You sound like you are way ahead in the soft skills of being a pilot and those are the ones that really separate adequate pilots from good pilots. I predict you will be one of the good ones.It sounds like you learned a valuable lesson, are accepting responsibility for yourself and not blaming others. With that attitude, I don't foresee you having any problems with future employment. Let us know when you get that PPL.

HAH, i LOL'd about running the engine over square and shock cooling.
seriously tho, doing slips with flaps extended wont hurt the airplane, it just causes a disruption of airflow over the elevator and causes the airplane to "buck" if you will. If you feel confident that you can control the airplane, theres no reason that i know of not to do it.
