FAA vs JAA in Africa

Does anybody know if they accept FAA-certificates in all parts in Africa? And what do they accept in Australia & New Zealand, JAA or FAA or do they have their own? The same question for African regulations!

Aussie, NZ, & S. Africa all have their own licenses (all three are called CAA I believe), I am not sure what is required to covert to them but I am sure you have to do it unless your flying a N registered aircraft.

The other countries in Africa I would say it depends on how developed the country is.

Generally speaking the FAA certificate is looked down upon by the regulators of other countries. The reason for this is that the theoretical knowledge required is significantly more and the tests are harder.

To convert an FAA ATPL into a JAA ATPL would require taking 14 written examinations. That can be reduced to as few as two if you have significant international PIC time in large jets. Contact Naples Air Center in Naples, FL for details as they are knowledgable about the subject.

There are a couple of guys over on APC who just converted to Kiwi/Aussie ATPLs so they can tell you the process in detail. Haven't heard of anyone doing an FAA to South African conversion, but it would probably be similar to the Kiwi/Aussie conversion which is a couple of writtens and a flight test. Look for screen name MayFly135s in the Foreign section or Koru Pilot who is a Canadian working for Air New Zealand.

I do remember chatting with a Dane who converted to a Kenyan Commercial certificate in the 90s. His family was very well connected in Kenya ( own a very large flower farm ) and it took him well over a month just to get the written scheduled.

If you are interested in the South African conversion then let me know, one of our pilots used to own a very successful flying school in SA and would know some details on the process.
