****FAA Reauthorization Act of 2009****

Finally, we have been informed by the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee that HR 915 will be marked up on March 4, 2009, at 11:00 am ET. We don’t anticipate as many Republicans voting for the bill as HR 2881, primarily due to the fact that it is a partisan bill. Nonetheless, we will be reaching out to our friends on both sides of the aisle for support. The bill will pass the full committee and head to the floor for a vote of the House as soon as it’s scheduled, probably sometime in March.

So what happens after March? Do controllers get any pay increase or do they have to wait till the next fiscal year (oct I think)?

Looks like this passed in the house. If I remember the how a bill becomes a law cartoon correctly...doesn't it go to the senate now?:buck:

Holy Cow that bill took FOREVER to read. I have a new sense of appreciation for lawmakers sitting and listening to that be read. I would TOTALLY struggle with falling asleep.

It does have some promising information but very vague too. Or maybe that is just my understanding is vague... :shrugs:

correct me if im wrong but only the house trans panel passed it. Now it goes to the house, sen, then joint house/sen to agree on the changes sen made, then the pres.

It was not up for a vote. It was "marked up" or slightly reworded in some parts, nothing that involves us was changed. The bill will be put up for a vote in the house sometime within the next week or so. There is no set date as of yet though. Should get through the house no problems, tough part will be getting it to the senate. I'm not exactly sure why but that was where the holdup was in 2007. Things are looking good though. Despite what some people on here say I believe we will see negotiations open back up very soon.

don't worry, most of them don't read the bills. That's what staffers are for.

True story.

I think this bill might actually have a chance. I don't want to get my hopes up (or anyone else for that matter), but most of the odds are in our favor.

Can someone summarize the act and it's effect of future hiring and training?

:yeahthat:

Here's what I found in the summary:

"Directs the FAA Administrator to...(2) assess training programs for FAA air traffic controllers; and (3) establish an FAA Task Force on Air Traffic Control Facility Conditions."

Sounds like it's gonna be years before anything gets done if we're still assessing the training programs everyone already knows are overflowing with trainees and lacking in trainers.

just wanted to bump this post back up to the top, we need to keep discussing this.

Anyone have any idea, what part of the process this bill is in Now.

essentially in a permanent stall. They extended the previous authorization for what I believe is the 7th time (correct me if I'm wrong) which means no one in congress wants to be bothered with fixing the FAA

Hopefully when (if) Babbitt gets confirmed as the administrator, something will get done finally. We'll see.

If they'd stop trying to push user fees every time they introduce this bill, it would have much less opposition in the Senate. Numerous Senators from both parties have come out in staunch opposition to them and won't vote for anything that has them in there.

I know that's not the only issue that has held it up, but it isn't helping the situation any.

Just had to put my GA hat on for a moment and bring up that point.

Passed the house! Anybody hear if user fees were addressed in the end?
passed without user fees. there were a few amendments. none of which involved user fees (sort of). it still puts a pretty big tax on aviation fuel, from what i understand.
they're keeping the contract language in there until this group of mediators and whoever the hell they are comes to an agreement with the contract.
