FAA Medical Process?

I have always wondered if the FAA in OKC even looks at your medical app once the AME submits it. Does someone actually look over every medical or does it just get filed?

Does the regional flight surgeon have anything to do with a medical that the AME sends in to the FAA or is he just there for special cases and questions from the AME?

I have always been curious about how the process actually works.
 
If everything is marked normal or negative by the applicant and the AME, no one looks at it. It is actually screened by a computer since the AME is required to submit the physical electronically. If there are positive answers, it is kicked out for review. The initial review is by a staff person. If they have questions, they send it to a physician for review.

The Regional Flight Surgeon in involved in some certification cases, AME appointments, center (ATC) staff health issues, etc.
 
So if I have a yes box checked with Prev reported in the explanation Box Does it still get kicked out?

With regard to the Regional flight surgeon. A few years back I disclosed a misdemeanor on my medical that I had not prev reported on other medicals simply because I forgot I even got the non traffic related ticket. My AME called the regional flight surgeon and he approved it over the phone. Is the only place this phone call got recorded in box 60 of the app? or does the regional flight surgeon have to put something in my file as well saying that he gave the O.K to issue the medical?
 
It is reviewed and it depends on the AME's comments in Box 60 as to what they do.

The FAA has a system wide computer hook-up. When the Regional Flight Surgeoin entered it in your record, it was entered so OKC would see it if they accessed your file. Kind of like posting here:)
 
How about for when you bring things into the exam like medical records? Are those kept in the computer system, or sent the old-fashioned way?
