FAA claims video from drones on YouTube is a commercial venture

Purpose of government aside, you haven't been able to differentiate these two groups of people(hobbyist) operating essentially the same equipment. Wasn't there a public safety issue with R/C planes. Yes or No?

The FAA has already proposed regulations that differentiate them.

Nobody is talking about RC.

"Nobody is talking about hunting rifles"

That's like saying that a car is just an advanced Big Wheel. The reason that these things are becoming so common is that they are so easy to fly, so easy to maneuver in tight quarters, etc. The RC crowd and the drone crowd are not the same.

"An assault rifle is nothing like the guns that responsible gun owners own"

What you call "knee-jerk government oversight," I call "sensible regulation to protect public safety."

I actually agree with you about the 2nd amendment, but the points are exactly the same.

Other than short final, the odds of an airplane coming within a mile of one of these things is astronomically remote. Keep them below 500 AGL, within line of sight of the opperator, and out of tower's airspace. That's all the regulation anyone needs

And stiff penalties for violating those rules. Along the lines of pointing a laser at an airplane.

These things need some kind of regulation or someone is going to get killed. Once someone does, there likely will be a regulation, but I'd rather not see someone get killed by an idiot with more money than common sense.

Big fan of the results of drone photography, but I see it as pretty black and white. It's going to happen.
