FAA Announcement AAC-AMH-08-PUBNAT1-08232

mstangpilot- you are going through a little bit different of a process but not beacause you are VRA but you didn't go the PEPC route. PEPC is an accelerated process. When you go to your local station it puts you 1 to 2 months behind which isnt a big deal, expecially since you are happy where you are.

I called OKC before last weeks meetings and was told 1-2 weeks, then an FAA rep (visiting our CTI school) told us thursday to expect 2-3 weeks/beginning of July, so who knows... it might end up being 60 days...

I talked to Nikki today with the FAA and she said that all selected applicants from this past weeks board will be contacted within 2-4 weeks..... We are currently on week 1 and hopefully will not drag out to 60 days. :rawk:

Well I've been waiting since the pubzid announcment in 2007 and I've been kinda of just being pattient with it assuming that it will never happen then if it does I'll be happy. I love my current job running a small airport so if it never happens I won't be to bummed, but I would love the job security and the challange. I'm part of the Feb 08 crew now and got a 97 on the AT-SAT. I'm curious of what they looked at in the selections because I have a 4 year aerospace admin degree grad with honors a 2 year flight degree CFI,CFII,MEI airport managment experiance. So I hope this all gets taken into consideration but nothing surprises me with this process. Last year I had all that and never got selected to take the AT-SAT while a Freshman from my college not only took the AT-SAT but also got hired at ZID. So who knows its a crazy world called the FAA. I'm also surprised so many people want to come to Indiana. I only put indiana down as geo pref since at the time I was hired by American Eagle to fly and since then well.....we all know the airlines suck now. So I'm glad I kept pluggin away at the ATC track I just hope it finaly goes somewhere this time but still not holding my breath. Good luck to all I know I will be super excited if I get it. ATC will kick the crap out of regional flying and there is very little chance of being furloughed:)

Ok i have an update. Both my girlfriend and I have received our letters for the Pre-Employment Processing Center (PEPC) and are being scheduled for our interview, security screening, medical evaluation, psychological evalutation, and drug test which are all to be done on one day between July 7 - 11 in NY. It states that if selected we will be receiving a tentative offer letter providing specific information on assignment and salary on that day. If anyone has any questions let me know.:yup:

In my opinion, this thread deserves to stay alive, almost 20,000 views! Below is an article regarding ATC hiring that pertains to Pubnat 1 especially, straight from the ATO's employee website.

June 23 — Hiring for both air traffic controllers and technicians is on track and is expected to exceed the ATO's goal for the year, according to Jim Trinka, director of ATO Technical Training and Development.
Since the beginning of fiscal 2008 through the end of May, the ATO hired 1,289 new controllers. Hiring numbers for the fiscal year are expected to be more than 2,000. This will exceed both the Controller Workforce Plan and the FAA Flight Plan goals for controller hiring.
The Controller Workforce Plan outlines the agency's 10-year controller hiring strategy, while the FAA Flight Plan is the 5-year strategic document for the agency. Both are updated annually.
With more frequent selection panels and the Pre-Employment Processing Centers – one-stop interview, medical screening and security clearance events for candidates – the ATO has significantly improved the hiring process, Trinka pointed out.
Selection panels for controller candidates are held every two months. The most recent panel, held earlier this month, selected around 1,400 candidates who will continue through the process during the remainder of fiscal 2008 and the beginning of fiscal 2009.
Due to the success of the PEPCs, the period between selection and the new hires’ start date at the FAA Academy has decreased from nine to two months. PEPCs are held every two weeks in areas with large concentrations of candidates.
On the other side of the coin, controller losses for fiscal 2008, per the Controller Workforce Plan, is projected at 1,621. As with hiring numbers, the ATO’s internal attrition projection is slightly higher and adjusted monthly. “The retirement forecast has been close,” Trinka said, “although total attrition numbers have not been as accurate.” Promotions, experienced controllers joining the instructor ranks and training attrition are slightly higher than projected.
Training times for developmental controllers are also improving. The average time for developmentals to achieve full certification so far in fiscal 2008 is less than two years (1.73 years combined average for Terminal and En Route). For fiscal 2007, the combined average time was almost three years.
Simulators in both tower and TRACON facilities are improving training, Trinka said. A total of 18 tower simulators in the field will serve 90 air traffic control towers once they are all deployed. In the TRACON environment, trainers can design scenarios in the Deployable Air Traffic System simulators specifically for individual developmentals based on their training needs.

I assume it's longer than that for enroute seeing as that's the average time... So what's enroute you think? 2.25 yrs?

"Hiring numbers for the fiscal year are expected to be more than 2,000. "

Am I to believe from these statements that there will be only 600 more controllers hired?

That doesn't bode well for the next 3 announcements worth of people waiting for the word...

1. fiscal years always end before the calendar year
2. the faa never sticks to its hiring numbers :banghead:
3. who's to say the 1400 picked earlier this month are actually going to make it all the way through the process?

I want to first thank all of you for your information. This forum has been GREAT at keeping me sane while working through this process. I will be attending the PEPC in Chicago in August. One question that I have not seen answered (please direct me to another thread if it exists) is that of salary.

I know that the payoff will be greater in the end and that taking this opportunity will be worth it. My concern would be the financial strain I would be placed under while at the academy and during the training portion of my employment. I know I haven't gotten the job yet, but I like to think ahead.

Anyone know the salary scale and salary timeline?

I wasn't selected in the first group of applicants, does this mean i am totally out or what? It does say to keep checking back for updates. not sure if i should re-apply when they post another opening. I didn't do the greatest on the test but i did pass. Also my email has changed and it took forever for me to be able to update asap so i don't know if i missed anything. I emailed them awhile back to check but didn't get a response. I don't mind that this is taking forever since my lease on my current apt still has quite a few months but gez i want to be in ATC!

Keep re-applying for everything until you are hired.

Michele, my husband is in the same boat. After telling us mid-June, because he is not well-qualified, only qualified, they are now telling us August/September we may hear something, but said nothing about reapplying. Anyone hear anything different?

KEEP APPLYING! KEEP APPLYING! KEEP APPLYING!

He may be contacted and he may not be... if he's not well qualified, the chances of him being contacted are a lot less likely. Tell him to apply to every single announcement that comes out until he gets hired. It's FAA recommended

Here's something to try while we continue our waiting game.

NOTE: I wouldn't try it on a random stranger, depending upon the laws in your area.
