F4 Phantom in storage?

Just wondering...Why does the military (in this case, the Marine Corps) keep their F4 jets in storage when they are obsolete? Do they plan to fly them again? The link below shows an F4 that's been in storage for over 15 years.

And/or sold to a country that can't afford the newest toys on the market.

There are like 20 countries that fly the P-3.

Japan(built their own under licence by Kawasaki Heavy Industries)
New Zealand
Australia
Canada
and Korea are the only one's that bought new aircraft, the rest are rehabed USN aircraft.

Hell, the US Customs P-3's are rehabed USN birds... NOAA's two Hurricane Hunters, are the only two non ASW built aircraft off the assy line.

In the P-3's case, we are pulling old low-hour baseline Charlie models out and re-winging a lot of the current fleet.

Speaking of P-3s, are the VP squads being drawn down some, in the sense that there should be adequate spares source for the remaining fleet? Or am I thinking the VS squads?

Yes, they have cut us back big time. Though its been that way for 7/8 years or so, we are down to 6 straight stick squadrons on each coast. 3 at each of the bases,

Whidbey Island NAS, Washington
Kaneohe Bay MCAF Hawaii

Brunswick NAS, Maine
Jacksonville, NAS Florida. (also home to VP-30 the training squadron)

The Q birds are in Whidbey (VQ-1) and Rota Spain(VQ-2) though Q-2 is moving to Whidbey...

So the recent drawdown your refering to would be the VS they are going away all together.

I thought the Hurricane hunters flew the WC-130

The USAFR unit does. NOAA has their own small fleet of hurricane hunters too that fly P-3s.

Those were the 20th Fighter Squadron jets coming from Holloman to the boneyard.
 
20th was the German AF/USAF F-4 training squadron here at Holloman. They closed down a month ago after graduating their last class of Germans. German AF is getting rid of their F-4s for the Eurofighter. German AF also has about 45 Tornado IDS birds here, and they're cutting down to about 12 for training here also due to German defense cutbacks.

That leaves about 30 F-4s still here at Holloman flying with the 82nd squadron.
 
MAD boom.

The Magnetic Anomly Detector senses changes in the earths magnetic feild caused by large masses of steel (like a submarine). It needs to be as far away from the airframe as practical. Helos have theirs on cables that are winched out into the airstream.
