F/A-18E v. Su-22

During Desert Storm, Syria/Assad was an ally of ours.

What changed? Arab Spring, where every opposition group in every non-democratic Middle Eastern country was overtly or tacitly given the green light to start a civil war if they manage to utter the word "democracy".

Regime change at all costs and little consideration of likely outcomes.

Look at Gaddafi, when he finally did everything we wanted him to do and started appearing like a rational actor, we signed his death warrant and threw Libya into civil war.

As you pointed out, Syria had come a long way from from their misadventures in Lebanon and reckless provocations with Israel to become our ally in war. In the midst of a civil war our leaders just point and tell us he's "killing his own people"
- no he's not.

With regards to Iran, we are doing everything wrong and doing all the things that the religious crazies are accusing us of, aligning with the Sunnis at every opportunity. The Iranian military is patiently waiting to seize power and the US does everything that would generate popular support for the president and religious leaders.

Crazy.

@Lawman have you seen the video yet., ?

Almost... almost ... makes me disappointed I didn't go Naval Aviator (Marine) route to wings...

Can't really take anything for granted when it comes to this. We learned that the hard way a long time ago with our USN F-4Bs and USAF -4Cs and F-105s, against the VPAF and their "ancient" MiG-17s early on in the war. So bad did we take that for granted, and it showing, that TopGun was devised to relearn old things we had forgotten, that only the Navy F-8 guys had worked on retaining. And why they weren't caught unawares by the same thing.

I meant more in terms of going against a 3rd world country's Air Force who we know has no means to attack or hit us anywhere here. Just poking more so at the war economic machine that exists. The 'machine' knows better than to go to war with a real military, like China, North Korea, Russia. Try shooting down one of their planes and see where that leads. Not quite the same battle when their nations have ICBMs and the ability to whack us at home. Especially North Korea, who just sent us back a comatose US citizen that's now dead, and still hold several other US citizens. But hey, big bad Syria.....
