F-35 basing political push - Luke AFB

And for the record, I think Luke isn't a good place to have the F-35, what with all the issues it currently has.

I could see Holloman getting it and becoming one of the newest "superbases", just due to their vast range area available, comparitively remote location, and lack of noise abatement or encroachment issues.

Holloman...great. I can imagine the excitement the new F-35 pilots will feel when they learn they're going to live in the middle of nowhere. It is ironic though...back in the day, the AF bases used to be *near* towns but still far enough away to not be an annoyance. Then the cities grew out to them, people started complaining and everything is now being relocated to "superbases" even farther away from everything. Maybe the isolation will revive the ailing on-base clubs?

On second thought, after driving the entire western side of New Mexico down I-25, why don't they just make the whole freakin state a military base? Seriously, there's nothing there, the few "cities" there are small enough and far enough apart that you could fly all over the place with little worry about noise abatement and such. Do the same with Nevada...but keep the gambling....and the working girls. Hot damn! I might be on to something here...

Thanks for the reply Mike. Fez - Holloman is not the coolest place to live, but my buddy flying Raptors out there actually really likes it. Maybe I'll edit this post after the fuge trip in about 5 months...

I hear ya. It just gets me worked up because I've seen an alarming trend towards marginalizing the brave souls who serve in the military in recent years. Everyone wants their protection, but less and less want to see or hear them. While on a Snack-O run at Costco today in uniform, I got a few thank you's and a whole bunch of "I'm sorry for what you've been made to do"

What I've been made to do? I know what I signed up for. And the American people should know what we do so they're not so apt to support some "limited" conflict ever again. If you're going to let the dog out of the cage, let it off its leash too. End rant.

Gonna take more than one fuge trip to really "appreciate" the place! Lived there for 3.5 years, and I think the only thing that changed was the addition of a Chili's :)
