F-15 Story in the news: super bummed pilot flys home on a commercial flight

The USAF has been seriously cracking down on "impromptu airshow displays" for some time now. The accident below of an AFRES F-16 12 years ago was a big catalyst towards this move. Maj Stephen Simons was a part-time AFRES pilot and Delta pilot in his civilian gig. Sadly, Simons' parents....Richard, also a USAF vet and Vietnam F-105 pilot with over 100 missions into NVN....and wife Phyllis were killed in the crash of a Piper Aztec he co-owned, 5 years later.

I love it when the media asks the general public about aviation. Endless entertainment.

Good thing the rocket boosters glowed bright, bright orange or zomgz it might have crashed.

I think that she did a good job explaining what occurred, probably having no knowledge of aviation or said terminology. If your local news was to interview you for a random piece on anthropology or agriculture would you have the knowledge or the industry terminology to sound competent?

Get over yourself!

I remember being a little kid in Japan when an F-16 would bust the sound barrier during training maneuvers. The thing I remember is my loving mother saying (in the NY accent) "if that's your father, he's dead". O, and Gloria estefan tapes over and over again as the only music...

The problem is this quote - "It was very close. Way closer than it ever should have been for any reason," Spradling said.

There's no way that person knows that.

Eh, I was born in TUS we have a military base there. We saw planes flying daily. She might not have known the FARS but she also likely saw AF planes flying daily due to her proximity of the base.

So she should probably be able to know what is a regular pattern, and an irregular altitude and flight pattern.

Of course this story has a connection to Florida.

Bob Hoover was grounded for the same behavior, and look how he turned out.

She was bound to get something right, she never shut up. I think she's still talking about it actually.

Funny, the American people, without even thinking, will ask these men to go hurling themselves into an IADS full of every kind of anti-aircraft device known to man, right into the teeth of those whose mission it is to kill them, watch their buddies get shot down, tortured, and killed.... all so she can move freely about the US and purchase goods with some price stability.

People like her are sickening to listen to and constitute much of what is wrong with America.

Woah, simmer down buddy. I think I gave the wrong impression. First off, no, I don't have in depth knowledge of the two subjects you mentioned, nor would I try and sound like I did if I were to give an interview. Second, if I did, I'm sure I'd provide endless entertainment for farmers and anthropologists alike when I talked about tractorin' and my thoughts on general human variation. Further, I'd be happy to have a beer with them and laugh at my foolishness as the seriousness with which I take myself is quite benign.

Third, I wouldn't agree to an interview to begin with, I don't like em.

If I gave the impression that your average Iowan should posses the knowledge of aviation we do, I did not intend to nor do I believe that, nor did I intend a holier than thou attitude to come forth. I do find it amusing when the general public professes their opinion on just about anything they clearly know little about, and in general when what was certainly an unusual, but ultimately a non-event is blown way out of proportion by the media.

Simply, I meant, that rather than get bent out of shape like I've seen pilots do over things like this, laugh it off and move on to things that matter. Much like I'd expect an anthropologist to do if I jabbered on and on during a local news interview.

Whaaaaaat? So it was really the ATC guy in Top Guns fault for denying Maverick his fly by? Traffic pattern full, be damned huh? This guy just defend our freedom yeeee hah ... thus he shouldn't be held to military aviator standards or codes of conduct. And should be afford whatever freedom(s) he enjoys, eh?

Protecting freedom doesn't grants someone freedom to break rules and be reckless or destroy personal property. Defending my freedom or not, if you foolishly smash out the windows of my car/house or rip of my roof (or parts of it) with your unauthorized low level fly by in your jeeeeeeeeet. While you practice for a slot in the Blues or the Thunderbirds. And you're gonna pay for your hubris.

God damn it, I wants some butts!

Fact is, things have change, a lot in military aviation, be it good or bad. I am about to retire after 20 years and like any sailor, soldier, etc who has served that long, we will always say things have changed during my time. When we check into squadrons or wings, we spend time having
to complete training on rape prevention, suicide prevention, sexual harassment prevention, etc. We have rules, restrictions, SOP's, regulations, etc that govern what we can do, how we can fly, etc. It is what it is, the day's of hot dogging are over. You fly 500' low during a fly-by, you lose your wings. Adapt or die. There is a video of woman calling 911, complaining about military jets flying fast and low near a pier. They seemed to be doing just that and they were military jets but privately owned. Most people don't know any better. I took a call last week from someone complaining about us dumping fuel as we flew over his house. Problem is, our jets don't dump fuel, incapable of doing so. He also claimed we were flying too low. We had to look into it, we were never lower than 3000' according to radar. No, many folks have no idea but they are the tax payers and politicians listen to them.

Hey Max! Nice to see you poke your head in here once in a while. Yeah, I gave you grief when you pushed the boundaries, but I didn't always tell you how much I appreciated your view point and input (especially when it forced me to re-evaluate my own). Thanks for that!

God damn it, I wants some butts!

Then again, the ban hammer is always handy if you push it too far!

:D

Love ya bro!

Two years ago I would have been commenting on how gay it was that someone complained. Now that I have twin sons who are difficult to get down for a nap, I say take his balls.
