Great Pic...BTW is the RIO asleep or did you just pull a lot G's that day?

Different duties, too.
Care to clue me in then? I though they both did the same thing. Run the weapons systems, radios, and electronic warfare packages.
RIO was in the F-14 and was primarily air-air radar runner, hence Radar Intercept in the name. When the Tomcat became a bomb dropper, the RIO duties became much the same as any other WSO; they just kept the name. F-model Hornet backseaters are now called WSOs. The RIO name went away with the Tomcat.
Thank you for the explanation. I was sad to see that plane get retired. It is the reason I am pilot today. I saw one at my first air show and wanted to be a pilot since about the age of 5.

I'm sure a lot of guys just signed up for the shirtless volleyball.Don't lie, it was because of Top Gun.![]()
One of the guys in the slide show looked like Robin Olds. But I'm not sure.

Even that's gone, for better or worse.I'm sure a lot of guys just signed up for the shirtless volleyball.
Unlike back in the day, in the AF we as pilots aren't married to a particular airframe. The airplanes are all part of a fleet managed by the maintenance operation, and we fly whatever jet we're given on a particular day by maintenance.
Close enough.Even that's gone, for better or worse
