Extend the Navy service or not?

What is so bad about the Navy? You're getting a pay check twice a month, you're covered head to toe medically at no expense to you, education beneifits (crunch the numbers - you're doing better on active duty than when you get out and try to do it on the GI Bill), and you are contributing to a retirement. It may be hard to believe, but the medical and retirement benefits are about as good as you are ever going to get - a lot better than most civilian systems.
If you stay in the US Navy until retirement, you'll have a check hitting the bank on the first of every month for the rest of your life. Plus health care til age 65. The fact that you have your own health care is worth a lot of bucks to you and any potential employer - making you a more attractive candidate.
One last piece of advice - if your job in the Navy requires a security clearence - make sure it is updated prior to leaving. That too is worth a lot of bucks to an employer and makes you a more attractive prospect. Good luck.

It's not bad in the Navy. I would have stayed till retirement had I joined when I was 18, that would set me free at 38 with a decent chance for another career. However, I am 34 now with close to 6 years in the service and staying another 14 really won't cut it for me. Military is a safe paycheck, but it's also a major drag on the ambitious person. In the next 14 years I probably have a decent shoot at a flying job that I'd be happier with. I hope so anyway. Life, liberty and Persuit of happiness right?
Well, it's either that, or I'll end up a crackhead :banghead:

This is the first time I've ever heard anyone say something like this. Until you're a 4-star admiral, you ALWAYS have something else to strive to...ambitious people THRIVE in the military. That's one of the things I really LIKE about being in the military is the caliber of people that I work with -- very few people who have no passion or ambition, and tons of over-achievers. Makes it challenging to rise to the top, but makes the pool of coworkers very, very worthwhile to work with and be around.
Care to explain more? What ambitions do you have that are being dragged down by the Navy?

well, I wish I could do things that you're doing, but apparently I can't so...I'm not staying a mechanic for 20 years that's for sure. Well, I'll take that back, it's not a drag on everyone, if I was a little bit younger and had a perspective to get a flying job in the navy I'd probably stay till retirement.

Well, You would not be a mechanic for 20 years. You would become an LPO and eventually a Chief and then you are a manager/leader.
As for the ambition claim, I agree and disagree:
Ambitious people do exist in the Navy and there is always something to strive for. The problem with the military system is that you have to wait for eligibility for the next rank/position. A hot running sailor who just made E-5 may be ready for the E-6 job but he still has to wait 3 years for time in rate plus pass the advancement test hoping that he/she is not in an overmanned rating which is only advancing 10% to E-6.

I really don't wanna sound negative about the military. Military was great choice for me, got me where I wanted to be. I wish I could have done more, but let's leave it at that. All I'm interested right now is a flying career and I don't see that happening in the military.
