ExpressJet peeps..

Yikes, the TCS button, that will make things harder... I actually screwed up the approach and submitted myself to the pain of going around and extending the agony. Got it down though. The sims are waaaay better than the FTDs, I have had a blast these last few evenings and we had a great instructor too.

Just gotta get through the last 4 sim sessions and hope for California.

They haven't given you your base assignment yet? sheesh. Sounds like you're tearing it up though. Did you get hobby for the sims?

I like the sims better than the FTD's too....on my last upgrade FTD I think I got a single engine loss of all generators approach with an ADF based procedure turn which turned into a dual engine failure on a 2 mile final. I was about halfway to mexico before I realized how to use the bearing pointers on the RMU nav display. In the sims at least they "keep it real", although on my recurrent PC yesterday we got to do V1 cuts in Reno, fun....

Not sure how long it will take you to get back west...But lots of perm bids have been running. My guess is you'll be back in about 4-5 months.

Hey, I actually think it's a good idea you get into CLE for a little bit. Especially in winter. You'll learn crosswind landing (they don't exist at LAX), better fuel management/diversions, and winter ops, delays....those things really don't exist out in LA. Overall you'll be better for having been there, trust me.

When I was hired here, I wanted EWR. I was disappointed when they announced our entire new hire class was going to CLE.

When I look back, those four months I spent in CLE were some of the best times I've had at this company. I started flying in decent weather, while it was still fairly warm, and ended my tour of CLE duty in the middle of winter. It was pure trial by fire (or snow). In fact, my first month in EWR, I got very depressed by the fact I wasn't in my old crashpad and my friends were scattered like sticks to the wind. I got over it, but those CLE days were fun!

Only two people out of my class of 16 wanted CLE... however we all were able to make the best of a bad situation, and when we see each other in the crew room, CLE stories always seem to pop up...

6 months

Hope not.

Personally? I'm gonna bank on 6 months and little movement in those 6 months so I don't want to hang myself if I don't get moved out in 2. I'm guessing I'll be able to hold ONT or LAX in the perm bid by the end of the year, but as far as when I actually get SENT out west? Who knows. That one is too complicated to try to figure out as far as I'm concerned.

And if you think your commute is gonna be bad, you've got nothing on this one. You've got six non stops a day between Phoenix and Cleveland, three on Southwest, two on CAL mainline and one on Airways. Me? I've got two, SOMETIMES three flights per day to Newark and one of those is a redeye so if I've got an early show then I'm leaving Salt Lake at the butt crack of dawn the day BEFORE reserve starts to make sure I can pull the commuter clause if things go wrong. Realistically? It's a two legger for me.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to complain about it, I just couldn't believe guys in my class were going on and on and on about their commute from LAX to EWR on the pipe when there are 14 flights a day between those city pairs. I know it's a LONG flight, but at least they've got options! Be thankful you have some predictable flights between PHX and CLE for the few months you'll be there, as there were 5 of us from Salt Lake in my class and we're all trying to get to Newark on very few options.

best case - dec 07 bid list.
worst case - may 08 bid list or longer.

like others have said the next bid will probably be in nov if they keep up what they've been doing. That bid will probably be 08-05, making it valid may of 08. Being pretty junior your advancement would probably be closer to the valid date than immediately.

If you dont want to wait see if you can find someone who wants to base trade.

So xjet fellas...

If someone really didn't care at all which base they got sent to, which would you recommend? If I get an interview/through training, I'll likely just move to where ever I get based, or possibly commute out of Orlando.

If you are going to commute from MCO then IAH and SAT lines would be the best option as they are the most commutable. For the most part, EWR does not have commutable lines.

If you don't care where you live at all then you might as well live somewhere cheap. IAH+SAT win again in that category.

Houston would be the cheapest place to live...but you've gotta live in Houston :)

San Antonio is a cool base from what I understand and has the most productive trips from what I'm told.

You'll never get off reserve in Cleveland.

Newark pilots are the best in the system (according to my OE check airman).

Ontario has the most commutable lines from what I understand.

LAX is all Delta flying and would be killer for me since there are guys starting and ending trips in Salt Lake City (where I live).

Some of us don't have the luxury of even one non-stop (on any company) between home and base! We've got the 9 hour, 2 flight option with the 5 hour sit in MCI OR the 7 hour, 3 leg, 5 minute layover option. And commuting on another airline isn't any easier. :banghead:

The only way to get into SAT is by base trade right now. The last two perm bids have let people out but no people in. People have been sent there out of training though.

True dat! I met a CAL mainline guy that HAD one flight per day going to Newark, then CAL dropped it. Poor guy has one flight going to Houston, but he had just transfered out of there thinking the Newark commute would make his life easier.

Sigh....this sounds depressing and I'm not even hired!!! Just thinking about a commute from SMF out to EWR gives me the chills...

So JTrain..how are the landings now??? Nailin' them??

I have a friend who got Cleveland as a base and three months later he was able to switch over to Newark. Good Luck.

Why would you have to live in Houston? Just curious. I was thinking about Xjet down the road because I figured an IAH base would let me live here in Temple longer; Plus all the uber-pilots go to Xjet;) Colgan flies Killeen to IAH like 5 times a day.

I should rephrase that:

Houston is the cheapest place to live, but you have to live in Texas.

(I spent a year of my life in Texas, and don't plan on moving back there for a third time)

Homefry is basically dissin' the Lone Star State... Not that I blame him...

Rephrased:

The Good: Houston is the cheapest base to live in...

The Bad: You'd actually have to live there...

¿Comprende?

;)

Cleveland, City of Light, City of Magic!

As long as there's a stream of new-hires coming in to displace you out of Cleveland, you'll be fine. Just give it a few months.

I just switched to IAH from EWR. I'll advance after this month. It was the only choice on the advancement bid, actually. Funny, considering the system bid had an effective date of March 2008. I'll be there months earlier than that.

Mike

Nope, only got 8 after 25 hours of OE!

Don't worry about the landings. My check airman's line had legs like IAH-YYZ and IAH-BFL. Not good when you're trying to learn how to land the ERJ. Another couple of hours of my IOE was spent sitting out a EWR ground stop. That was helpful :sarcasm:! Don't worry, you'll get there.

Texas' not that bad. You just didn't live in the decent part of Arlington. I love where I live in Dallas. There's all the sports you can handle, the cost of living is cheap, and there is a pretty decent culture there. Austin is even better. Plus, you hate wherever you live. I give you 6 months in SLC before you start to hate it.:)
