ExpressJet internship

LIES! THE CRACKPIPE TELLS NOTHING BUT TRUTH!!!

I'm positive that I'm going to get recalled back to XJT because of the new Japan Airlines flying, only to be put on a 2 week suspension because I didn't update my Jepps!!! IT WILL HAPPEN!!!

:)

Love my daily dose of crackpipe. Trouble is, I can't stay away. :D

Looking forward to recall, August 2016. That is, after the company loses the UAL flying because of staffing cancellations. :insane:

Why on earth would anybody do an airline internship? Do they pay?

Do something that pays.

I did "something that pays" when I was in college, instead of internships that could have helped my career. I worked at Target, UPS, and Jimmy John's, and while those jobs put change in my pocket, they sure didn't help my career (actually, may have hurt it). You need to think long term here.

The internship will pay off eventually by being hired much sooner than he/she may have otherwise.

It's a very proven way to get your foot in the door when one would otherwise not be competitive for the position. Getting 1000, 2000 hrs of TPIC can take a long time and require many flights etc....Spending 3-6 months doing light office work and being a "yes" man, not so tough IMO.

They fly you positive space to IAH. Try and get a seat in first, you won't regret it. Coming from the Mid-Atlantic/North East it is a long day. Finding the shuttle over to the XJT facility can be kind of a pain and the directions aren't exactly clear.

Starts out with an overview of XJT and the internship program in the group setting starting at 9:30.; they may wait for people who missed the shuttle or who's flight got in late. Then you go in for a one-on-one interview which is actually very short. I feel mine may have only lasted 5 minutes max. Then you get fingerprinted and that is it.

If I remember correctly it is Angela doing most of the interviewing and she runs the program. My one-on-one with her was very relaxed and pleasant. She looked over my resume and asked me some typical HR type questions. For example "What do you bring to the table at XJT? What are a few qualities you would use to describe yourself? What are you hoping to gain from the internship?"

I was really surprised they flew us all down for an interview of that brevity.

Internship is NOT paid nor is housing provided for free. They do have crashpads for the XJT and CO interns. One is downtown Houston and the other is closer to the airport. You do get preferntial hiring after being an intern; I believe 600/100 minimums and as soon as you hit that you get an interview (provided they are hiring).

Good luck. Enjoy the free trip to Houston.

GUNIT described it pretty well - it's a one-on-one (or one-on-two in my case - they had two people asking me questions). Basic HR questions, no asking you to read a chart or anything like that. Interview took maybe five minutes. The waiting around took forever. I think they fingerprint you as well in case they decide to take you and want to get a head start on the background check.

If you get interviewed early, it's a pretty short day. I was one of the last from my group, so it was a very long day (not helped by the fact that my flight back from IAH was delayed for de-fueling - first time I've ever seen that happen).

Thanks for the gouge. How did you like the internship experience overall?

If the XJ interview doesn't work out, American has an internship program as well. I believe they are or will soon be interviewing for spots that start mid-May. They have both paid and un-paid stuff on the mainline and Eagle side.

Thanks for the heads up!

Are there any restrictions as to what type of airline internship positions offer reduced minimums?

Do you have to work in flight operations?

Are there any such internships that allows non-aviation majors to apply?

I am not majoring in aviation and I applied for the XJT one. They have one every semester.

Its not about getting paid, its about networking and making connections with people that can help you land a job at a major airline much faster than those who do not do an internship. I did a internship with a major airline last fall and since everything went well I have the opportunity to land a job with them with just the bare minimums, when there are hiring. I also went through there new hire program where I accumulated 35 hours in a 737, that has been logged in my logbook. Also my family and I had the privilege of flying first class for free,to anywhere this airline flew, which was pretty much everywhere. I now have recommendations from fleet managers and the senior flight director from a major airline. I don't think I could ever put a price tag on this experience. So when this airline is hiring and there are receiving thousands of applications a week, It's nice to know I already have my foot in the door and have a great chance of getting hired there.

Couldn't tell ya. Didn't take the offer. But the first class to and from Houston was great! Seemed like good people at XJT and I'm sure if you're 21 the crashpad downtown Houston has got to be fun.
