Express Jet code share changes

AA wholly owns regional airlines too; they own Envoy, PSA, and Piedmont. Since Delta also owns a regional, I can't see United sitting on the sidelines for long...

The difference is that AA has done the opposite and branched out from its one wholly-owned. Years ago, it used to just be American Eagle (now Envoy) doing all the flying. Then Chautaqua started as AmericanConnection. Then came Republic. And now after the AA/US merger there are quite a few carriers flying as American Eagle now. Envoy, in the process, lost a number of their 145s to ExpressJet and Piedmont, and their -700s are all supposed to go to PSA eventually (don't quote me on that as it may have changed since I worked there). DFW and ORD, which were almost all Eagle, have a huge presence of Mesa, ExpressJet, SkyWest, and PSA now.

On the other hand, the rumor floating around at my shop is that within 10 years or so, there will only be 3 Delta Connection carriers: Endeavor, SkyWest, and Republic.

If that's true, then that'll mean a contraction where I work; G7 flies as United Express and Delta Connection. Our parent company, Trans States Holdings, is one of the bigger players in the regional airline business; between subsidiaries Compass, GoJet, and Trans States Airlines, TSH has over 150 aircraft. I think TSH is planning on being one of the last ones standing when the inevitable consolidation takes place. We'll see how it all plays out...

The regionals are going to have to consolidate at some point, too much competition is driving the smaller carriers to take smaller and smaller margins with higher risks for penalties. I would not be surprised if XJT, CommutAir, GoJet/Transtate, AirWisky, and maybe even Mesa get clumped up somehow. It will be easier when fleet types are reduced to dual class jets, and of course this is pure and wild speculation.

I don't think you are too far off course with that.

Only 500 flights a day isn't going to happen. Especially when the United contract is for 126 aircraft for 5 years and the American side has 20. Along with that the rest of the 700s will end up with someone whether it be United or American. So while it is a small downsizing, there will still be 160+ aircraft in the fleet.

Feel like "small downsizing" is a little understated. With 160 aicraft you are talking maybe 10-12 dispatch desks? And I thought it was explicitly stated that those numbers were the absolute maximum of the contract options. Rip out all the auxiliary jobs related to the Connection side (crew scheduling, payroll/finance/HR, etc) and you've got a lot of empty space at A-Tech --- not to mention a pretty impressive hangar space that you don't need anymore. I don't doubt that they can find a way to operate for the next few years but the issue then becomes what space will they occupy. A lot of people seem to like the IAH idea but I wonder if the could whittle everything down to fit in the 7th floor of Hartsfield Center in the back-up ops center.

I see Endeavor picking up a lot of flying previously with XJ - anything on the latest with them? Are folks getting laid off, bailing, or prepping for a possible move?

I heard they were being offered packages. A few of them have taken the package and gone on to other regionals. Layoffs coming if not enough of them leave.

Mesa isn't going anywhere..

Hopefully someone will keep us updated with this.

I’ve got family at ExpressJet and could submit my resume when I get my dx ticket but there’s no point in that if they are laying people off/downsizing.

Would you apply there as a last option to get SOME DX experience?

If I could get in with the idea that I wouldn't be laid off for at least a COUPLE of years, I'd apply. I really like Atlanta, and ExpressJet seems like a decent company (not the best, but not the worst).

We'll see if they even have any openings next year but since the posters above say that people are taking packages, it doesn't seem like it unless I'm missing something.

Don't expect them to hire until well after the dust has settled from the DL contract ending. Or maybe never if they don't get it together.

Even if you got in for a few months or a year, it would be experience; it might not be as much as you like, but it would be something-particularly if fresh out of school. In the PSA thread, one of the posters said that potential employers were curious because he hadn't done any dispatching during the year after he got his license; they were starting to hold it against him.

Atlanta is nice and just down the street from your DL overlords.
