Expect the XX Approach

Still trying to reach the Top Shelf
I guess I should know this but I can use some controller help here:

I was on my filed and cleared flight plan that included an arrival. I was 60 miles away and told to "expect the VOR 11 approach". Now the arrival swings me around to an in-line point along the final whereas the VOR approach brings me to the VOR, outbound, procedure turn to return.

I stayed on the arrival only to be yelled at for "departing from the approach route".

Please help: Is an "expect the approach" an authorization to fly the procedure or am I to maintain my last clearance until told to fly to a point "for the VOR 11 approach"?

Thank you, in advance......

If I am reading your post correctly you did the correct thing in staying on the arrival and not commencing the approach. As an approach controller myself I tell pilots all day to expect xxx approach....I dont expect them to start ther approach. Untill I say the words "cleared for xxx approach" I expect them to fly the last instruction I gave them. If you don't mind me asking where was this at?

follow rherrick's advise... you haven't been cleared for anything and were simply told to expect a clearance for a specific type of approach, which is something that never happened... If you would of started the approach without the clearance and there was a mishap Your butt would on the line, Not the controllers...

Yup. I want to say that 'EXPECT' tells you what to do if you lose communications. It is NOT a clearance.

That is what expect usually means. EFC, Expect Altitude etc etc.

It's also nice to know what approach you are doing before you're on top of it.

Other than if there is a published transition for the VOR 11 approach on the arrival that differs from the standard arrival, you did nothing wrong.

I would file a NASA report just in case.

I told the controller, "You said to expect it, you didn't say to fly it". I told my right-seater that the expect is for lost commo only but then I started second-guessing myself.

Thank you all for your input on this one.

BTW, I was on the ULUBA1 arrival, just outside of ELOPO (transition) when told to expect the VOR Z RWY 10 going in to Princess Julianna Int, St. Maarten Island.

Thanks again for the help.

Agree with the others, an expect clearance is NOT a clearance therefore you are required to continue as previously cleared. No NASA report required, you did as you were cleared to do. Had you begun the approach you then would have been in violation unless you lost voice com.

I am not a fan of expect clearances. I normally only give them if I know I will be issuing a clearance that will require an expedited maneuver after clearing traffic.

Fan or not we are required to tell arrivals what approach to expect.

Was gonna say, I'm very much a fan of the 'expect'. Someday the radios will quit. That, and lining up all the magic should be done BEFORE "Maintain 3400 until established, cleared for the ILS, tower at the marker, peace out"...

Well, from a pilot's perspective, please continue to give them. We need to know what to set up and brief prior to receiving vectors.

Take this with a grain of salt, because I am not familiar with that airport, airspace, and internal procedures- but if I told a pilot to "expect XXX approach," (as I am required to do) I would be absolutely dumbfounded if they came off the STAR and commenced the approach as a result of that transmission.
