Excessive TCAS Evasion Injures 20

Unrelated to the TCAS issue, but a good reminder to always keep that seatbelt fastened......

I would be willing to bet that a large portion of the aircraft had their seatbelts off. Taking off your seatbelt seams to be the culture for most Asian airlines. The first time I flew on Thai Airlines from FRA to BKK I was shocked that the seat belt sign was litterally turned off as soon as the landing gear was in the well on takeoff. I kid you not. Not only did most people take their belts off but many got up out of their seats and we were barely 1000' AGL.

I had an RA of about a 4000 fpm descent, triggered by a couple F-16s operating in a nearby restricted area (they were about 10 miles away when the TCAS squawked at us).

But yeah, 12,000 fpm seems excessive.

I have seen TCAS command 2000 fpm climb followed by an increase climb with the lighst pegging the VSI 6000 fpm. Thankfully we located the traffic and were able to turn away from a light twin that was climbing into us.

12000 fpm does seem quite excessive
