Essential Air Service program a waste of $$?

Don't ask me ask the guys who wrote the bill.

Somehow, I don't think that those who wrote the Airline Deregulation Act in 1978 ever imagined that EAS would involve flying jets. Especially because when originally written, the Deregulation Act had a kicker in it, that was to end EAS 10 years after its enactment.

I wouldn't and don't have a problem with the EAS service on 1900's and smaller airplanes. Look at some of these cities, that have 340's, EMB-120's and even CRJ's. Do we really need to subsidize a CRJ-200 route, when it could either support its self, or go to a smaller plane with EAS. Put Cessna 40'2 (ala Cape Air) on those routes, if that is all they support. Look at the Alaksan EAS, you've got DHC-2's, Cessna 185/206/207's, BN-2's, PA31/2's and even a Grumman Goose.

But, that said, it would take too much common sense for the government to do something that makes sense.

Wellllll, the big money in EAS is picked up by the Eskimo jet. Does Wrangell or Petersburg need 737 service? No. What about Juneau even? Maybe in the summer, but year round? No.

You beat me to it. If Southeast Alaska had a smaller regional airline service, we could save quite a bit of money. Pretty nuts how we get 2 734's landing there everyday.

arent the planes alaska flies on eas combi outfitted? when i went to petersburg a few years ago they were running the 200's and those were in combi config. If memory serves me correct they flew juneau petersburg ketchikan sitka then seattle. Have not been up there in some time so things may have changed. In fairness to alaska airlines they were full with cargo going in and out of these cities.

Though it pains me to fly an empty airplane from point A to B, as a guy who makes his living off these routes I say long live the EAS!!!:D

They are not necessarily outfitted in combi form.

That's just what the law says... Some cities must have the right to Jet service. In regards to the CRJ's
Tell that to the guy who spend 10 minutes bitching to me at my gate about how its an insult that RDD has no jet service and how UA and AS are going to lose RDD because WN is going to start flying 737s in there 30 times a day.:dunno:

Haha... Man I don't know how you deal with the people at your job.

I'd be like :guns:

I think EAS is a huge, pointless waste of money but I'm a pretty big Libertarian and am fairly anti-government anyway.

You mean, if you really tried you don't think you could sneak a loaded gun past the Thousands Standing Around?

You know, I almost left that part out because I have the same thoughts. For argument's sake though, let's stick with the :chair:.
