ERJ Single-Engine Taxi . . .

interesting topic :)

now I'm curious what it sounds like lol

It sounds like a 3000 psi electric hydraulic pump.:D

Then again I'm an engineer, and one of my "it sounds like sounds" is a electric hydraulic pump.;)

Imagine a high-rpm electric motor that has a plastic flapper attached to it and continuously beat on it against a fixed table.

The sound of the ERJ's APU exhaust is the most annoying thing. Even sitting inside another airplane- you can hear an ERJ parked on the same ramp- its ear drum scratching bad- makes me want to wear earplugs while sitting up front doing my paperwork.

Is that the one that sounds like a dog barking in the cargo hold?

Pretty much. I find it similar to the drill a mechanic uses to remove the lug nuts from your tires. Either way it's really annoying when you get sent to the penalty box in PHX.

Is it as annoying as the sound of a single engine taxi in an Airbus?

OMG...the freaking Airbus is the most annoying, loudest plane evaaaaaar!!!

That plane makes some really odd sounds, like the dog barking sound, and then theres gear retraction...

In a Boeing it's like "clunk" as the gear doors come down, then another clunk as the the gear retracts, then another clunk as the gear doors close.

On a frickin' A320, it's:

"waaaaaa, waaaaaa, waaaaaaaaaaa, waaaaaaaaa. click, click, bang bang, crash."

Then waaaaaaa waaaaaa waaaaa waaaaa, again as the gear doors close.

It's sounds like some one is turning a crank up front to open the gear doors!

If I'm holding on the ramp somewhere with just one engine going I will turn off the electric pump and save everyone the headache. Might not be the textbook thing to do, but I've been back there in 15A with that pump running and it's not a pleasant experience. I usually turn the dimmer on my PFD all the way down as a reminder to turn the pump back on before I start taxiing, but if by chance I do forget, I usually won't get too far without the #1 hydraulics before I realize what I've done......

Actually...depends on the company. I'm not sure whose ERJs you're hearing but most have a "quieter" APU exhaust stack. But I've been parked next to one that didn't and I agree it was louder than normal and much louder than ours (xjt). The loud ones have a very short exhaust, the quieter ones are slightly longer.

In a boeing it's like "cluck" as the gear doors come down, then another clunk as the the gear retracts, then another clunk as the gear doors close.

Going home from Vegas was my first time on a A320. Jeez that thing made a racket. I was like WTF? But the crew wasn't worried (FAs know when the plane makes noises they shouldn't) So I continued off into my nyquill induced daze.

It it aint Boeing I aint going:D

I do that all the time as well. I'm sure if you wrote the powers that be, they would appreciate you thinking "outside the box" for the comfort and concern of the customers. I say that in all seriousness. There is "by the book" and then there is "can't think outside the book at all." It's good to see someone who thinks outside the box... We've been lacking that here lately...

another a.net/airplane dork moment:

I was just thinking about my trip home from Vegas I flew a southeastern based carrier via their western hub so I could fly an MD90. The MD90 sounds similar to the Airbus. When the fuel pumps turned on and the hydraulic pump started running my rowmate started to freak out. She wanted to get off the flight so I explained what it was and she calmed down a bit.

Despite my pep talk she was white-knuckled on the armrest the whole flight.

Sorry for going off-topic.

:yeahthat:That was my first time on an A320, I think I had a puzzled look on my face the whole flight:p:D

Fixed it Snickers! :D

And when did Continental have A320's Justin?

And while were talking about a.net, how dare you sleep during takeoff!!!

Were gon' revoke your membership card!

Haha ...Piedmont allows single-engine taxi in the Dash-8-300s. It's not allowed in the 100s though (I think they used to).

No, it wasn't restricted to the 300s when I worked there. I wonder why that changed. I remember in the 100s, half the time it jacked up the electrical when you started the other engine on the roll: RNAV dumped, spoilers came up, etc. It could be avoided, though, if you tied the buses first. Oh well...Very few people (I could count them on one hand after a circular saw accident) I flew with ever SE taxied, anyway.
