ERAU-Minor?Big Step!

Hey Everyone,
I just signed up to this forum and it looks to be just what i've been looking for.

I'll be an incoming freshman at ERAU DAB as an A/S Major (don't bitch just yet

) in Fall 2005. Now, until I founds this forum , I thought that Embry Riddle is the best damn thing that could happen to any aviation freak out there.
I love aviation more than anything and there's really nothing else I'd like to do in life than be an airline pilot.
I've read alot of negative things about ERAU or any other expencive university for that matter, but I'm still sticking with ERAU because I think it's the right school for me.

Ofcourse I'm blinded by my dream , but I still have enough rationalism in me to see that I really need a backup if something doesn't work as planned.
Hence I'm thinking about the Business Minor along with my A/S Major.

So: Will a business minor really be a backup for me if I can't fly ? Or will I have to be a business major to have a succesfull career in aviation business?

If I major in business and minor in flight, will I still have the right education to be a successfull pilot?

I'd like to get in touch with some ERAU students currently in A/S, who are in a similar situation as me. Post your ideas.
Is a degree from Embry Riddle really as useless as it's described in most threads?

Thanks for your answers.
Phil

I wouldn't say an ERAU degree is useless. If so, I guess I'm screwed, too. I would say that it's no better than a degree from any other college.

One thing you might want to look into once getting to DAB, switch to Aviation Science (?) instead of flight as your major and get your ratings from one of the FBOs on the field. It's a lot cheaper and in a lot of cases less frustrating.

As long as you don't go out into the world with the "I went to Riddle so I deserve the job" mentality you'll be fine.

Amen. There are so many private students here who think they are hot sh*t because they greased an 8 knot xwind. As long as you don't buy into the "Riddle is the be-all and end-all method of flight training" theory, you will be fine.

Funny story...I took as AS student flying in March off campus and while I was starting the engine, he gave me a puzzled look and asked why I wasn't doing flows. A flow is what riddle teaches students to use when doing normal procedures. It consists of doing a checklist, such as "Before Starting Engine" by memory and then going over with an actual checklist to make sure everything was done properly. I think its supposed to emulate an airline's way of training or something. Anyhow, this kid was confused as to why I was just reading off the checklist and performing the task.

Just go in with an open mind no chip on your shoulder and you'll do fine

I was an aeronautical science major at erau last year. 3.9 GPA. Transfering to another university next year. Be careful when you go to riddle. lot of bullsh**. lots of rich stuck up a**holes who think they are so much better than everyone else. You were asking about the business major. Yes, you will be just as qualified with a business major than anyone else. At riddle, you get a degree in aviation business administration with a flight option, which gives you all your ratings other than instructor ratings. You are just as qualified and anyone who tells you different is an idiot. They push that aeronautical science degree so much at riddle and i hate that. You need a backup and another way of making money when the time comes that you cant find a job. You need to plan for the worst in this industry. Flying off campus isnt such a bad idea either. It is good flight training with riddle, but ridiculously expensive. Its also ludicrous to spend that tuition money on a degree in aeronautical science, which may not be worthless outside of aviation but its pretty close in my opinion. This coming from a guy who just spent a year in it. Also, youre gonna have to deal with alot of idiots next year. They accepted 95 percent of applicants to the university. Youre also gonna have to deal with the new bullsh** with that part 142 program they put in tplace this year. Good luck with all that. Got any more questions about the school let me know. You'll get honest answers, unlike the ones you get from the administration.

"If I major in business and minor in flight, will I still have the right education to be a successfull pilot?"

Yes

Thanks for your input everyone!
Any ideas about this question?:

" Will a business minor really be a backup for me if I can't fly ? Or will I have to be a business major to have a succesfull career in aviation business?"

It looks like I'll just go and see how ERAU is. If I dont like it I'll change after a semester or year.

The thing is, I'll be an international student- from germany, so I think any college will be expencive for me.

I took a look at the flight prices recently and almost fell out of my chair. They are charging (if i remember correctly) ~$263/hr for dual in a seminole. That easily means you can have cross countries that will cost upwards of $750!! I think dual in a Cessna is approx $150 some. They'll tell you the planes are less than 3 years old but they will have more than 3,000 hobbs on them, not very new IMO.

But back to the original question a business degree is a business degree no matter how you look at it.

I can personally say that youre 100 percent right on those prices. it was ridiculous trying to get a rating done there. Ive had one or two cross countrys in the seminole that were about 700 bucks a piece! so ridiculous that i just got out of that whole situation. I spent 9 grand working on a multi engine add on to my private at riddle and didnt even get a chance to finish it after the entire school year. it sucked. no thank you.

I'll be honest with ya, I'm gonna have a Professional Aero BS with a management minor. I was going for an aviation safety minor, but I liked the management classes better. The minor was more or less accidental, but at least it's something. I also have the added bonus of several years of management experience in the theme park industry. If things get REALLY bad, I could always tuck tail and head back to that.
