Entering old data and endorsements in an electronic log book

I started using SafeLog and so far I really like it and I'm working to go back through my old logs to enter the details from each flight so it has an accurate break down or experience. Anyway, I have a question: If I scan the endorsements from my original paper logs, and attach them to the electronic log record, is there any reason (other than sentimental) to keep the original logbooks?

Has anybody determined if scans or photocopies of endorsements are acceptable records if the originals are lost or otherwise destroyed?

I would keep the old ones as backups to all the original ones. You never know when you will need them.

Re: Entering old data and endorsements in an electronic log

I'm personally on the fence about eLogs (and I've had one since the days of DOS). The federal e*sign legislation authorizes the use of electronic records but allows some reasonable regulation by federal agencies. My concern is that the FAA hasn't really spoken on what special indicia of reliability or authenticity it would of eLogs "kept in a manner acceptable to the Administration" (61.51).

My movement on the fence is a little shaky. My conservative side says scan the endorsements but keep the paper logbook. My liberal side says who needs the paper at all. My middle is moving toward the e-Log being primary and the paper being a backup with absolutely the minimal information to show that an entry is properly countable. I expect my view to change over the next year.

Just some thoughts and not very helpful ones.

Re: Entering old data and endorsements in an electronic log

I keep an Excel spreadsheet as my primary logbook.

I keep all my old paper logs with endorsements as proof -- I don't scan and put in the electronic log. I also keep them as a backup in case of something happening to the electronic logbook. I also have printouts of the Excel logbook made every so often as a hard copy backup.

I keep paper logs for when I do need an endorsement for something.
