Employment history for applications

Just wanted to get a little input from you fine folks.

Im working on filling out my apps for some regionals and I understand that everyone wants a 10yr employment history because of the background check. I had about 4 different jobs back in the day when I was in high school. Now I've found my W-2s so I can determine the year of employment, but these applications want day and month!

Ive spoken with a few people that say the start date doesnt matter, but the month does. They suggested justing doing the correct month and then the day should just be the 1st. I'm told if there are any "kinks" in your employment history on your app vs the background check, they pretty much just through your app out.

How can I get this information of start dates. Some of these places I am sure no longer have records of my employment since it was 7-8 years ago.

Any ideas/suggestions?

The most obvious answer would be to call and see if a HR department would have that info. Have any paycheck stubs?
Lastly the social security office may have record of that info. Or IRS office.

Just go by month, there's nothing wrong with having worked numerous jobs because you were in high school and college. Nothing to feel guilty about. If there's a descrepancy that really bothers them they'll ask you about it. Truthfully, an HR person spends usually very little time digging back through your youth and early unrelated employment. The only exception would be a job that requires a security clearance... Then they like to get they're hands dirty.

I just guessed for some of my HS jobs. I had a couple paper routes and worked at a grocery store, so when those were within my 10 years, I think I just said I started my paper routes in July and my grocery store job in September.

If your jobs were official jobs (taxed pay), you should have bank records, right? I think being in HS counts as a "work history" anyway so you're not on the hook for being "Top Secret Accurate".

I've always just used my school as my employer for the times I was in school. Most companies don't care that you worked at McDonald's and delivered pizza during college. They do care that you were ambitious enough to secure employment after your school responsibilities were finished. Make sure you have a seamless and accurate (to the month) record of employment after your schooling was finished.

If you really want to put something regarding employment during school, you can always include it in the job responsibilities section.

They're looking for 10 years of background whether it's working, school (high school, college, etc...), military, unemployed, etc... As for the exact dates, just use the month and year because you should have no lapse of record for more than 30 days for 10 years, if I remember correctly. I just put the 1st day of the month for all of mine and it's worked out fine so far, as long as you know the year, and month.

Unless I remember the exact date, I just put either the 1st or the 15th. No HR is going to notice if you put down the 1st when you actually started the 10th. I'm not even sure that information is recorded anywhere anyway, except maybe the company itself. One thing I've always done is keep all my past jobs in my contacts on my phone and my laptop. Then in the notes section, I'll type in my supervisors name and the month/year I started and ended. That way it's always there with the multitude of airline applications you'll probably be filling out throughout your career. Now that it's been more than 10 year since I started college, it's getting easier to fill those job history forms out, as I have less jobs to list!

With them asking for the past 10, what if you only have your current (as you have worked there over 10 years)? Should you put others as well?

I never put any non flying jobs down. In college I worked at u haul for 2 years and in high school I worked at a ford dealership but I didn't list that. I put student or whatever down. Was never asked anything about it.

What did you do at U-Haul?

Most of the places I worked at don't even exist anymore. My first 'real job' (ie not under the table) and 2 flight schools. Another one moved to a different airport.
