Emirates representatives will be in Atlanta for the Air Inc. job fair on Saturday May 20th. They will also be doing a separate ( read free ) presentation on Sunday May 21st at 0900. If you meet the minimums of 4000 total and 2000 jet, or are close to it and are interested in attending let me know and I'll get you an invitation.

Yes, this part:

"Emirates is not for everyone, that much is very clear. I've been at Emirates for 3.5 years as well. I'm very happy with the decision to come to Emirates. It has provided a stable rewarding re-start to a career that was destroyed in the USA by 9-11, greedy management, and incompetent unions. Would I choose EK over Fedex, UPS, SWA, and a few others? No, probably not, especially if I was younger. But for certain people in their late 30s to early 40s I think it can be an excellent move career wise.

A new joiner can reasonably expect to upgrade in 5 years or so based on current growth plans and attrition. ( Disclaimer, things happen in the world and plans change so don't hold anyone to this ). Starting pay is better than almost any other job out there. New hire F.O. pay is now $64,000 per year. That is tax free. There are other parts to the package that make it very worthwhile to consider based on your personal circumstances.

Is EK perfect? = No. Are their problems? = Yes. You have to weigh what you want out of your career and what kind of a lifestyle you want. As I said at the top, EK is not for everyone, but for me it has been very good and I have no regrets.

Tim,

Now that EK does ultra long haul flying, and will probably expand those operations in the future, is there any plan at EK to have S/O like Cathay Pacific does?

By Second Officer, I mean the the relief/cruise pilot as Cathay Pacific has done. Any plans for EK to do that in the future, from what you've heard?

Typhoon, what's it like living in the Middle East. How much time do you get off to come back to the states?

Sorry, I didn't see this post until now.

I wouldn't group the entire Middle East into one category. Living in the Green Zone in Baghdad versus living in Dubai are very different. Sort of like living in a bad neighborhood in an inner city of the USA versus living in the upper middle class suburbs of the same city.

Dubai is modern, safe, and generally a pleasant place to live. The traffic can be a bit bad at times and it gets very warm and humid in the summer, but beyond that I find it quite enjoyable. Great golf weather for 7 months of the year. The other 5 it's still possible to play, but isn't as much fun. Excellent recreation choices outside of golf as well and now that we have an indoor ski slope I'll be spending my summer days there :)

I call Dubai a cross between Florida coastal living and Southern California big city living. Sort of a Las Vegas with a beach, but no gambling.

I have 42 days of vacation per year. Two trips back to the States per year is easily done. If you want to make a few more shorter trips that would be possible as well, but a little costly as you only get one free ticket per year. The rest you pay for.

......

And if the urge strikes you, you can go ice skating at the Hyatt Regency Dubai and then enjoy dinner in the revolving restaurant on the top floor. Or at least you could back in 1992.......
