Emergency Landing at KIDI

Hey all.. I watched an Aztec fly around for an hour or so burning up fuel before making a wheels up landing at KIDI this past friday. The pilot did an excellent job and I posted the pics of the plane after it was moved into the hanger. There really wasn't that much skin damage at all, the biggest cost would probably be the prop's themselves which were damaged when they struck the runway.

Here are some pics of the plane itself

The FAA prelim report isn't up yet but when talking with everyone turns out the spring/rod that locks in the wheel after it drops is what was faulty. The pilot landing gear up rather than taking a chance of loosing control if the unlocked wheel did lock or simply broke when they did touch down.

Everyone was ok !!

Just thought I'd pass it along !!

It appears he feathered the props before landing and prevented engine/prop damage. Excellent and smart job on his part. The gear wells supported most of the weight of the plane and minimized damage to the wings and belly.

Note the inlet fairing under the left engine.

Yeah they played it over and over on the Pittsburgh news stations. It was an extraordinary wheels up landing. The guy even held centerline which some pilots have a hard time doing WITH wheels

Anyway, they said he shut down one engine on final (left I believe) and shut down the other just before he touched down.

Don't knock non-centerline ops. I never takeoff/land on the centerline. I maintain my downwind side of the runway for takeoff, and clear to the cold side of the runway on landing rollout.

Bad karma to be on the centerline, since other planes could be passing me there.......

No disrespect MikeD. I'm not even a pilot yet...guess I just had the false assumption that the centerline served a purpose of a reference point for staying on the center of the runway/taxiway.

It does, by all means. I was just kidding with you about how military planes are almost never on the centerline. The centerline for us is a "brick wall" if you will since, for example, during formation takeoffs, if one aborts, the other passes and continues takeoff...hence, multiple ops on the same runway.

Gets us funny looks by the civilian pilots!

at the end of my post. Didn't realize you weren't a pilot yet. My bad!

PS- Nice landing by the Aztec pilot.

Hey MikeD. No problem at all!

Also, no reason for you to think I'm anything other than a pilot...my name has flyer in it and i'm on the jetcareers forum. I'm actually heading to a flight school in June after I get my degree in may. Anyway, just wanted to let you know there were no hard feelings whatsoever. Have a good one!

Hey Jester..

Just took me a minute to catch that.. YES.. that would be the plane.. I actually just switched CFI's and will finish up out at KIDI .. I've only flown it twice but seems like a pretty nice plane... well.. at least to the older pa-28 I had been flying.

Silverhawk,

I put a few hours in that airplane flying photos and instructing. Air Rave has a pretty nice setup.

Take care!

P.S. Keep that chief pilot Steve in line.
