EMB-170

Anyone read the new issue of Airliners just got back from reading it at Borders?
Sounds like the new EMB-170 is as easy to fly as a car is to drive!
Anyone flown in it yet or at the controls or jumpseated on it?

I've heard it is very similar in both handling and avionics to the ERJ. Not exactly as easy as driving. That plane is going to be trouble for ALPA, the airlines will want to pay small-jet wages for a plane that is as large as a 737. Get ready to duck!

Yea... I don't have the article in front of me but they said engine start takes about 30-60 sec. and is a easy as turning a nob and monitoring the EICAS.
But yea they said very similar in flight handling to a 145!

Shouldn't be a problem. Those airline pilots are overpaid anyway.......

Better living through FADECs!

That's all we do in the ERJ, and I think the newer CRJs have FADECs as well.

I know several people who have flown aboard a 170 and they all liked it. They all mistook it for a 737 at first, then couldn't figure out why the seats were 2x2.

I heard the autopilot was new as well, with full VNAV capability. I hope they improved the flight director though. The ERJ does a bad job of intercepting a radial or localizer, and you have to be careful with the vertical modes to avoid abrupt pitch changes.

Overall I found it impressive that Embraer was able to build the 170/190. It was a huge step both in size and complexity.

I was on one last month (I think), operated by Chautauqua. NICE airplane. Leather seats, two by two seating. Plenty of leg room. From the standpoint of a passenger, it was a great airplane.

The word on the street is that it is far easier to fly then the EMB145. Lots of nice added features. I will be staying away from it for the next couple of years as far as flying it goes.

Yea the article said that Embraer made the 170 with low time pilots in mind.
Figuring that the average captain would maybe have 2000 hrs. and the co-pilot would have 500 tt and up!
So with that in mind it was created as a very, very low work load plane.
Incidently why do you want to stay away from the 170?

is the 170 really the size of a 737 ? they look a bit smaller to me...but thats just judging from pictures. they look more like a small airbus to me !!

There an inch larger then the EMB-145. So not quite the size of a 737...well maybe a 100-200 model!

yeah, I always thought that they were around the same size as an A318.

[/ QUOTE ]Actually, he was right. The E145 is 98 ft long and the E170 is 98 ft one in. Neither measurement is usefull though. You are comparing apples and oranges. The 145 has less usefull fuselage length because of the tail mounted engines and associated systems. The Embraer website does not give the cabin length for both airplanes, only the 170, which is 63 ft 10 in.
As far as fuselage size, the E145 cabin is 6 ft 11 in, the E170 is 9 ft 0 in, and the 737 is 11 ft 7 in.

They look like a 2/3 scale 737 or A319. From a distance they look similar. Side by side it is rather noticeable. Much like comparing a 767 and a 777. A 777 doesn't look that big by itself, until you see it beside a 76 or 737.
