Electronic logs?

I have my paper logbook plus a pretty in-depth excel sheet I built but I want to be able to log my flights as they happen so I never have to "catch up" again.... I have log ten for iPad and iPhone and find it a pain to start from my current numbers... any tips out there for this?

I also met a guy who swears on safelog. At an interview he showed me his logbook he had printed and bound. I was quite impressed with it. Wanted to get the communities .02 on this subject...

The top 3 are Safelog, Logbook Pro, and Log10. All have their pros and cons. I have Safelog, but don't like that I have to reup every few years. I LOVE Safelog's features, but will probably switch when my "lease" is over.

OK I didn't know there were only a few out there... So when your ready to switch do you know which one you will try out next?

There are more than a few, but I think those are the main 3. I will probably switch to Logbook Pro, but they all seem to nickle and dime you.

I have LogTen pro, and that's all I brought to my first airline interview, and besides barely looking at it, he was more impressed with the way it looked than what was actually in there... I don't plan to bring paper logbooks, because I have 0 entries in a paper logbook minus my initial flight training, which is all photo copies of my individual lessons from PVT-CFI/CFII, and multi-commercial in a separate binder.

I used flightlogg.in for the longest time, went to it shortly after it went live. I finally gave up on it, after it was down so much. Hard to complain about it being free though. I'm on Logbook Pro now, but I still fill out the paper log from time to time. Trying to decide which would be better to take to an interview, handwritten original log or the electronic printout.

Did you just print it on your home printer and bind it or did you show them on your iPad? When you start using log ten for the first time how are you supposed to put in all your times? I guess I could have multiple entries for 172 300 hours etc... but once you get picky with single PIC night, SIC turbine etc it starts to make sense to just go through two logbook and enter 3,000 hours... I know I'd get it all done then find out something isn't right and have a hell of a time trying to figure out the issue....

suggestions on how to start the electronic log? I know I can make one entry for each plane but like I mentioned the issue becomes how much Xcnty in singles or multi, Night in each plane etc....

Start it the same way you would start a new paper logbook. I did one entry for Multi and one for Single piston with a remark stating a forwarding entry...Then brought my old paper logbook to show old flights. Never questioned.

I put it on a thumb drive, brought it into Kinko's, and they did it for around $15, if you bring your own paper. Check out www.logbooksolutions.com . That's where I got my binder, and the paper from. I put all 1,500hrs of my time in by hand. Typed out every entry. As for the signatures, if they REALLY want to see every line signed, well that's exactly why I copied all my individual recommendation/achievement sheets, and put them in a separate 2" binder broken down by certificate/rating. Once I became a CFI, I never once used a paper logbook again. I had 1,000hrs dual given before I even got another hour of dual instruction, and that was for my multi commercial. For the multi commercial signatures, I used a paper logbook, but now have converted those to Logbook Pro, including the signatures. Logbook Pro allows the CFI/MEI to sign your logbook electronically, and it locks the signature onto that specific line. So, now I'm 100% paperless. As for those pesky entry fields, you can make a new Smart Group as LogTen Pro calls it. Smart Group is a customized grouping of times depending on what fields you input into it. I.E. Single-Engine Night IMC. Just select the right fields and it'll give you those times, etc...

BTW, If you don't want to insert 3,000hrs by hand, you can make 110% sure that your paper logbook(s) are dead on accurate, and in your electronic program just do a group entry for the whole 3,000hrs. If you setup your logbook right you shouldn't need to revert to the paper logbook ever again, minus any signatures the perspective employer might want to see.

I am a CFI and have been using LogTen Pro for the past year and half. I love it. I REALLY helps out when organizing your time for airline apps and the like. It also helps keep track of your time when you have a busy day of instructing. I just enter the flight on my iphone on the walk back into the hanger and then I am finished!

I haven't entered anything in my paper log for almost 8 months. I was planning on writing every entry in the logbook before an airline interview but looking at the above example I'm not sure if I will need it. I have heard that some airlines still want to see a paper logbook. Do you know if this is true? Maybe just paper as in printed out?
