Eight people are believed to be dead after two planes collided over Coeur d'Alene Lake in Idaho and then sank, Kootenai County Sheriff's Office Lt. Ryan Higgins said.

A call came in for two planes that had collided over the lake around 2:20 p.m., Higgins told CNN Sunday.

Two victims, both deceased, were recovered from the air crafts before they sank, Higgins said.

The remaining six victims are still unaccounted for but are believed to be dead, Higgins said. They include adults and children but no further details were available. Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the collision or how many victims were on each plane, Higgins told CNN.

The planes were located by a sonar team in 127 feet of water, Higgins said, and will not be recovered until either Monday or Tuesday.
One aircraft involved in the collision was a Cessna 206, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor told CNN.
Investigators do not yet know the make and model of the other aircraft involved.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the collision, Gregor said.

There were several witnesses who either saw or heard the collision or were witness to the aftermath, Higgins said, as many people were boating on the lake during the holiday weekend.

The sheriff’s office has confirmed one plane involved was a float plane operated by Brooks Seaplanes, based in Coeur d’Alene. That plane was carrying five passengers and one pilot, according to the release. The passengers included two adults and three children.

NTSB confirmed its involvement in the investigation via Twitter Sunday night. It identified the planes involved in the accident as a Cessna TU206G and a de Havilland DHC-2.

I flew with a captain a couple years ago that was about to leave the company after buying a seaplane business in Coeur d'Alene. He invited us to come up there anytime and he'd take us up. He was a really nice guy and I hope it wasn't him. :(

From the private company Facebook page it appears the Brooks pilot was an old OO Capt. :(

It was a former OO captain, I didn't know him personally but he was a great guy from what I hear. Tailwinds friend.

I flew with him on a 4-day trip a couple years ago. He had just bought the seaplane business and offered to take me up if I ever made my way up there. He was a great guy and apparently was well known and liked at OO.

I grew up in Coeur d’Alene and the Brooks Seaplane base was always a sight to behold for me as a kid.

Sad to hear and condolences.

PGA pro Sean Fredrickson died in a plane crash in Idaho over the weekend, a tragic accident that also killed his son and two stepchildren, officials said.

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office said Fredrickson and his family died Sunday afternoon when two planes collided, mid-air, over Lake Coeur d’Alene before sinking in more than 125 feet of water, according to FOX12. Officials said eight people were aboard but no one survived.
