Eclipse Aviation Introduces Eclipse 400 Single-Engine Jet

I HAVE STRONG OPINIONS ABOUT AUTOMOTIVE LIGHTING!
Eclipse Aviation Introduces Eclipse 400 Single-Engine Jet

ALBUQUERQUE, NM — May 30, 2008 — Eclipse Aviation, manufacturer of the world's first very light jet (VLJ), today announced at its E-rrival customer event that it will start taking orders for the Eclipse 400 single-engine jet, a production version of the Eclipse Concept Jet first displayed at EAA AirVenture 2007. [blah, blah blah...]

The four-occupant Eclipse 400 jet cruises safely at 41,000 feet, or three miles above its closest competition. It will feature the most sophisticated flight deck and complete aircraft integration available in general aviation. Its robust V-tail design provides superior handling and it is powered by the Pratt & Whitney Canada PW615F, delivering unrivaled fuel economy.

The Eclipse 400 is priced at $1.35 million in June 2008 economics. Similar, single-turbine engine aircraft range from seven to 107 percent more expensive than the Eclipse 400. Deliveries for the Eclipse 400 are expected to begin in 4Q 2011.

It's pretty futuristic looking... We'll see what happens. Seems like a smaller and smaller market for the personal use VLJ's now, with piper, diamond, cirrus and eclipse.

Ugh. . .these damn things. :banghead:

I'd really like to see how these things are going to perform with aged engines. Class A airspace is already a mess, now toss these guys in there with no TCAS or similar device that the transport category and 121 operators have to have.

I can only imagine.

oh relax :D

I just don't want to be anywhere near one of those things in the NE Corridor between the hours of 8am and 8pm.

I would also think that they wouldn't want to be anywhere near it as well, but unfortunately the marketing is too strong with these guys.

Remember RVSM rules apply to everyone who wants to operate in those altitudes regardless of it being a 91/135/121 flight. Meaning the plane and the pilots both have to be certified and covered under that S/N's op specs. If you sell an RVSM A/C it has to get re-certified under the new ownership.

I think the only exceptions are "life flight" operations, or flights that can get above RVSM without intermediate level off's or "cause undue delay" in RVSM airspace.

So relax.... :)

Re: Eclipse Aviation Introduces Eclipse 400 Single-Engine Je

Oh hell. . .didn't even think of RVSM. . .lol

They're up there with piston singles that are slower than dirt, single engine turboprops like the Pilatus that are slow compared to jets, multiengine TP's that are as 100 knots slower (than the Eclipse) and even some smaller jets like Citations.

It's just something that everyone's going to have to deal with.

Re: Eclipse Aviation Introduces Eclipse 400 Single-Engine Je

I'm sure it does have TCAS. It may not have TCAS II though.

Besides, should a CRJ FO really throw stones from his 500fpm glass house? :)

Re: Eclipse Aviation Introduces Eclipse 400 Single-Engine Je

Why do I feel..."weird"...when I hear or read things like Single-Engine Jet (excluding military)?

That's 500FPM at .70 thank you very much . . . :panic:

Nevertheless, it's not my glass house. :)

If the number of these things that Eclipse has slated to be delivered are actually delivered, I'll be waiting to see the figures on how many are still intact after year one.

Unfortunately, yup, no TCAS II. Despite that we live in a world with Mode S datalink-capable general aviation transponders, the aircraft is unable to coordinate a maneuver.

The datalink and computing power is there, but other common inputs needed to adhere to v7 TCAS II are not present (specifically, a radio altimeter is optional).

Re: Eclipse Aviation Introduces Eclipse 400 Single-Engine Je

ATC: "Polar, say speed"

Me: "Polar 268 Heavy, Mach Nine Oh"

ATC: "Eclipse 1 Delta Bravo, say speed"

Dude: "Uh, 223 indicated"

ATC: "In Mach, sir"

Dude: "Uh, point four six"

ATC: "Polar, what's your min speed?"

Me: "About Mach eight oh, we're heavy today"

ATC: "Polar, can you climb today?"

Me: "No sir, too heavy"

ATC: "Polar 268, descend and maintain flight level 350 to over take traffic"

ATC: "Roger that 1 Delta Bravo, you have Heavy 747 traffic at six oclock, same direction, over taking at 150 kts two thousand below"

Luckily it will only cost about $6000 dollars every time we do this.

(math prolly doesn't work out, I made it up. For Dramatization purposes only, not for navigation)

Coffin and chute not included. :sarcasm:

Re: Eclipse Aviation Introduces Eclipse 400 Single-Engine Je

Whats the insurance gonna be like on these things?

Re: Eclipse Aviation Introduces Eclipse 400 Single-Engine Je

Id be surprised to see if they are even still in business to deliver these things. The only hope they have is that they can eventually get their act together on the eclipse jet to help pave the way for this new single when it releases. The eclipse is already I believe more than double what they said it would cost and months and months behind delivery schedule with countless other problems.

I would think it would depend on who is the primary pilot of the aircraft. Some people just get these so they can have a "business" jet and hire a pilot that is qualified to fly and possibly already has turbine experience.
