Earplugs?

Ok... So.. here is the question. On the Citation, my captain is ADAMANT, ON NOT WEARING headsets above transition. Reason he says... "With a headset on.. that's one more thing you have to take off to put on a O2 mask". So the wind noise.. though not as bad as on the ERJ135/145, its still enough to get to you after awhile. So I'm wondering about the use of them during flight there?.....

On another note.... is this thread also suggesting to use ear plugs say.. with a Bose X headset as well? Im pretty sure that would make it extremely quiet!!!!

One more note: Wasn't there a thread not to long ago, about good/bad of noise canceling headset as far as long term ear protection is concerened? SOmething about noise canceling actually would DO DAMAGE?????? over the long term use?

I can understand the deal with not wearing a headset past transition Alt. But how much time are you really going to save in the event you did have to put the mask on. Earplugs with Comms on the speaker should work fine.

My first intention was not to encourage wearing earplugs, just to get an idea of how many people practice doing this. I guess seeing now the importance this, has indirectly encouraged its use.

FWIW I am an earplug nazi, I even wore them in the RJ when I wore/wear David Clarks which are my spare set. I normally wear Telex 750's which are just speakers and wear the regular ear plugs you find in ops. However I would like some custom made, as the foam ones don't work well when you continually put them in and take them out, so I find I leave them in for an entire 10, 12, 14+ hour day and it feels a little tender once I remove them.

I've considered getting the Telex 5x5 headset and having the ear plugs mated to the headset so the sound is piped in. I have no idea on the noise reduction of that. Lightspeed also makes some but it's around $600 I believe.

My dad was a C-130 navigator for a few years and basically has no hearing, I think that is why I wear them so much.

I use earplugs underneath my helmet....haven't had any problems, though some guys prefer to use CEP which is basically a set of earplugs with headsets built in. Basically cancels out the background noise and only lets you hear comms. Not sure if there is an equivalent that would work without a helmet. While there doesn't seem to be a lot of noise in flight, on the couple of occasions when I flew without plugs by accident, I could very easily tell the difference after unstrapping because I had a nice ringing going on in my ears. If it can do that after ~ 1 hour, I can only imagine what it would do throughout a career.

I changed over to CEPs after they became available. Things go so bad with the audio panels (pilots without CEPs would crank up the volume on the radios, those with CEPs wanted the volume turned down), that our commander finally instituted that all crew members had to wear them. When I flew MH it was not as bad as crew members could individually tune the volume to each radio.

I dunno where everyone at work gets this unlimited supply of earplugs, I can never find any laying around. I just put my fingers in my ears when I walk around the ramp that feels just fine. Man, that CRJ APU is worse than anything.

Yeah, the CRJs APU is horrible. Especially the blast when doing a lav on them. The worst APU is definitely a Hawker's.
