Don't fall into the rapid upgrade trap.

Valid point. The relief of knowing that economic improvement in my paycheck is coming is *huge*. I like to think it's more to that end than anything else. Options are nice, but I'm not out to stab people to get my coveted 1000 hours TPIC.

Devil's advocate: The FO pay scale sucks. Economic relief comes with upgrade. How soon an upgrade is 'rapid'? At what point does upgrade time become deleterious to the mindset of career pilots? If Eagle becomes the fashionable carrier of the day, what will that do to our pilot group mentality? I think even our long-standing "angry and sullen" still trumps "vapid and distracted".

Upgrade when you're ready. That's my philosophy. You are the one that coined that ambiguous term. Some people are ready after 6 months, some after 6 years.

I just wonder how the movement has affected your outlook on this philosophy from this time last year.

More or less the same. I figure by the time I see upgrade, it'll be about four to five years of right seat time behind me, not including my brief stint at Colgan. I'm starting to reach for more responsibility and a greater understanding of what the Captain's doing. I like to think when the time comes it'll be about right. I guess we'll see.

As for 'rapid upgrade', good point. Perhaps the better way to say it would be "don't chase the fastest possible upgrade." In the long term, I think spending a few years in the right seat has been good for me. I might have know things, but taking the time to dry out and cure a little certainly hasn't hurt.

Here is a vacancy bid...and a letter from the union saying we are closer than ever to being spun off. Sort of middles things out huh?

Half a distance time and time again just means smaller and smaller distances between you and a point that you still haven't reached yet. I'll sweat the divestiture when I actually see it happening. Even then, not so much. We won't vanish overnight, whatever happens. In the interim, the status quo applies, and movement means better lines and better checks.

Surprise, surprise- the staffing situation in the airline world is already creating pressure to raise compensation.

From my understanding, you guys are locked in until 2013, right? What can management do to raise pay? Just offer new hire bonuses? Can they unilaterally bumb the pay? If not, can they amend the contract with the union's blessing?

If both parties choose to negotiate at any point, they can open part or all of the contract. There's language in the contract to that end, IIRC. The rest rule amendments might require it.

Is that email posted on the "cattle call" offer on airline apps manned at all? I had a question and never got a response, I thought they were desperate.
