E6B Flight computer

I'm trying to figure out this #@mn thing and it's confusing the heck outta me.
Anybody else have trouble with it?

Since I swithced to teh electronic version on my Palm, i have no problem at all :insane:
 
Real pilots don't use flight computers







....that require batteries.

What exactly are you having trouble with? E6Bs are easy once you get your brain around the basics.
 
once you get used to it they really are easy and fast faster than an electronic one just takes alot of practice

The manual that comes with it really helps if you take your time to do the practice questions. I'm amazed how many students don't read that book and pay me to do the same things.

A lot of folks have problems with this circular slide rule. This is one of those times that, unless it's covered very well in ground school (I know one that uses a 4-ft E6B for demonstrations), it's not a bad idea to buy a 1/2 hour one-on-one ground session.

As others noted, once you do it a few times, it's pretty easy and even begins to make sense. The wheel is really just a ratio calculating slide rule. The back a wind triangle.

I used to be on the same page aloft until i got one. I admittedly use it for most of my preflight planning from WCA's to weight and balance and fuel consumption etc. I really like it. The screen is a piece of crap and not enough light and you cant see the screen, and too much light and you cant see the screen, not to mention it was bought in 2005 and it looks like something Mr. Wizzard would have used (those older then 23 know who i am talking about)

On the other hand, i only find it useful on my couch and not in the airplane environment when i cant see the screen. The E6B is super fast and convenient once you get used to it and its common functions. I even use the one on my watch every now and then for real quick functions like ETA's etc.
 
They usually have the directions right on the wheel on one side and then the directions at the top on the WCA side.
 
One of my instructors taught me how to use it to calculate square roots. Its not easy, but it works. Its amazing how much you can do on it. One of my students was amazed that all the numbers just "magically line up" like that. He told me he was afraid of it, like it was some kind of witchcraft tool. (Jokingly of course)
 
Read the manual, work the practice problems, spend some time with your instructor, and just practice. I used to race my students that swore by their electronic E6Bs with the tiny one on my watch computing ground speeds, ETAs, etc. I'd have the damn thing solved before they had the data input.....
 
I would just like to know what brand of E6-B doesn't come with instructions...I mean surely you would have looked at those first!?!?!?!?!?!:)

actually i didnt get instructions with mine. I got the "wonderful" sarcasm cessna kit. I wonder if someone had this kit before me? I thought it was new when the school took it out of there glass display case.

So what operation due you actually have a question about? Figuring KTAS? Fuel burned over time? Give an example of your problem and we'll see if we can explain it.
