Dx recurrent training with flamingo

Hey everyone, I posted my story in another thread but long story short - I've had my license for 5 years without ever having used it. I'm looking to become "re-certified" and competent enough to begin working at a regional. I bought some books, a few of which were suggested to me by fellow members here (thank you) but I'm looking for something a little more structured.

Has anyone heard of or gone through flamingo air ground school? I inquired about their recurrent dx program and this is what they said:

AIRCRAFT DISPATCHER RECURRENT TRAINING

The Recurrent Course consists of 11 subjects – Aerodynamics, B737-300 Systems, Air Traffic Control, Dispatch Resource Management, Flight Planning, IFR Charts, Manuals and Publications, Ops Specs, Meteorology, Airports, Crew and Company Procedures, Communications, Hazardous Weather, Navigation, Regulations, Emergencies, and Practical Dispatch.

The course consists of PowerPoint Presentations, videos, internet courses through the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, references to FAA sources for additional study as well as Airline Ground Schools’ references.

The cost of the course is $500. Upon registration, you will receive a user name and password. Upon completion of the training course, you will receive a recurrent certificate.

This course surpasses the annual FAA requirement of 20 of recurrent training in Part 121.

Basically I'm worried that I won't be knowledgeable enough to get through an interview. How much do regionals expect of you prior to hire and how much is learned from OJT? I've got the basics down; 123 rule, reading wx and basic wx theory but fairly iffy on approach plates, dep, landing and alt mins and weight and balance (cg stuff).

I apologize if I come across as frantic and uncollected but this is a new direction for me and I want to put my best foot forward.

Have you got any good dispatcher or pilot friends? They could run you through the things you need refreshed on pretty easily for the cost of a few beers, saving you the $500 :-)

There are a lot of YouTube vids out there that break down an approach plate also. You could probably find a fair amount of what you're looking for that way and it's free.

Let me know if you have specific questions - PM me. I'll help as I can. A refresher is a great idea honestly, but that's also a chunk of change when you have all the info available at your fingertips.

I was about to say...dispatch licenses are forever unless you do something to lose it.

Womanpilot is 100% correct in just using the internet / youtube / looking up far's and if you get on at a regional, they will do the rest.

Theres also a book out there (cant think of the name) that prepares you for the written / oral exam but I use it every once in a while to hit some obscure stuff before a comp check...its pretty comprehensive and will set you back like $30 instead of $500.

Use that $500 as savings when you realize you will be making $16 an hour at a regional hahah.

This is a great book! I used it a lot to refresh when studying for interviews. It's the ASA Aircraft Dispatcher Oral Exam Guide. If you can't find a used one for cheap, PM me your address and I'll send you mine.

If you're really stuck on something, fire a question off to the group here. Might help jog our memories and will definitely be helpful to others who happen across this stuff.

It's available on Amazon for less than $20... Also available in ebook. It is an invaluable resource.

Well I could use an extra $500, so send it to me. (COD even) and Ill answer all your questions!!!

Now if you want correct answers, that is an extra $500.

:D

I've used an ASA prepware app for my ground school class this semester. It costs $10 and has all the questions that are asked on the written exams with the answers and explanations for each. On my stage exam a couple weeks ago I scored a 98% thanks to that app as a study guide.

There are several different prepware apps, including an ATP one with 1,500 questions. You could look into that as well.

This is only to prep for the ADX and IMO would be of minimal value for what he's looking for.

Great job on your stage exam!

I work at a major in the training department. Believe me when I say this....that's a waste of money. As many have said, post your questions on here and we will help you out, or buy some dispatch friends some beers ( I prefer Bourbon hint hint) and they can get you back in the gig.
Honestly my advice is review weather, (characteristics of a warm and cold front, thunderstorms, what is a microburst ( and the danger they pose), interpret weather charts (aviationweather.gov is a terrific resource), review when you need an alternate, how to derive minimums (C055 alt mins aka 1 approach/2approach rule), how to read and interpret NOTAMS, how to read a METAR (and pay attention to the remarks at the end), how to read a TAF, the basics. No company is going to get system/aircraft specific in an interview.

Do you remember how to do weight and balance on a 727? Other threads here have seemed to suggest it may be extremely important.

Maybe if you go to work for Kalitta... Otherwise I can't see how an airline is going to be asking you about that airplane...
