DTW based pilots: Areas to live near the airport?

Looking to move within ~30-45mins, at the most, from DTW. Any suggestions on good areas to live for a mid to late twenties male? I know the Ann Arbor area offers a lot to do, but it's awfully expensive, especially for someone without roommates. Anyone experienced Ypsi? I've visited the Royal Oak area before and not so sure it's for me. I'm a MI native, just too far of a drive from the DTW currently.

Ann Arbor

Canton

Seriously, Canton

Plymouth

Northville

So yeah what the guy above said. Stay away east of the airport and away from Detroit itself. West and north are good, about 20-30 minutes out.

I lived in Canton for a few years. Certainly cheaper than A2 and yet had plenty of food and shopping. Easy 20 minute drive to the airport most days.

Were you Mesaba?

Nope. Was commuting from DTW to CLT. After I gave up on commuting SFO to DAY (4 years of that crap was enough) we needed someplace east of the Mississippi to move to (and it certainly wasn't going to be Dayton). My ex wife's grandparents live in Northville so we went up to Canton to be close to them. Plus I knew @jtrain609 , and even though he was a hack (and still is), I figured that if he lived there it couldn't be all that bad.

Get outta town, you are the PSA guy to HAL right? I had no idea you were a Bay Area guy. DAY had to be a tough commute from there, ugh :(

My in-laws still in Canton. We fly there from LAX next week when school is out and my vacation starts. I do miss Canton.

* Several Tim Hortons - like 3 of them in town.
* Great Middle Eastern food.
* Famous Hamburger!
* Area growing, lots of new stores/construction

Where are you from?

North of Flint, in Flushing. Without heavy traffic, from my door, to parking, to my gate, it's just about 1hr45mins

Cool, I'm from about 30 miles east of Saginaw, but live in Ann Arbor now.

If you like that life, there are a number of options near Ann Arbor that won't have Ann arbor prices. Howell, South Lyon, Saline, Dexter, or Chelsea are all viable options for small town living.

If you want Ann arbor on a budget, and you have kids, move to Pittsfield Township. Depending on where you are it's an Ypsi address, in Pittsfield township, with Ann Arbor schools.

Ypsi is Ypsi. It's like a miniature Detroit in some ways, and a poor man's Ann Arbor in others.

If you've got kids and you want a bland, lifeless, faceless suburb, move to Plymouth or Canton (@BobDDuck those are Emily's words, not mine). I wouldn't move there to pick up women.

I would avoid down river if you can.

Are you going to Cookingham for medicals? He's worth the drive, in my opinion, if you like him and he's still practicing, otherwise check out Robert Gordon when you get moved down state, he's over in Canton if I remember correctly.

Sweet. Thanks for the help.

I do not have a family and my SO is in Indi. I'd really like to be in AA or at least close by, if I can find a way to not break my wallet doing so. There's just more to offer there for me compared to a lot of the other SE MI cities...my rock climbing gym, good bars, sports, etc etc. Plus it'd be nice to have stuff to do when the lady comes and visits, as there's not much to do where I'm at right now.

I actually went to Gordon my last time around. Previously I was traveling for a previous job so much, I hadn't used anyone from MI. Not a bad experience...tad pricey. I'll check out Cookingham though.

Ew, planet rock? It's...ok. @broncoav8r and myself climb there, but primarily because it's the only game.

Shoot a message if you want to get some routes in.

LOL! Yes, because it's the only game. Nothing much else to choose from, unless you go west to Kzoo. I only have one other person to climb with, so that'd be cool. But, fyi, I'm nothing special. I'm lucky to make it up an 11- on a good day. I'll give you a shout.

Yeah...I do my work on 5.9's and 5.10's. Planet Rock's grading system is...unique.
