Drill command voice

This is kind of a stupid post but I couldn't find the info on Google so I though I'd just ask here. Does anyone know a website that can help me with my command voice? I just use it for drill in JROTC but I wanted to match the way the top cadets do it. I've also heard many jodies from the real military(:p ) and they make it sound very different than they are written. Like forward in forward march for example, seems to be said more like HO-ward arch.lol

How did you guys in the mil develop your command voices?

Chew gum while you're saying it LOL. I really don't know, but I think it sounds kinda dope!!!

okay...its a tuff question..

"Jodies" by the way are guys who sleep with your wife while your deployed...

just watch major payne a few times.... break it down like this

there are two parts to a command

1 - Preparatory(sp?) Command " Left "
2- Command of Execution " Face!"

prep command in a loud monotone voice

pause

Command of execution is accentuated " Fuhayce!"

LOL hope that helps

ps - watch major payne and full metal jacket thats prob better

When you talk, you normally use your lungs and your throat.

When you shout drill commands, you need to force the air from your diaphragm, and form sounds in your mouth. The goal is to project sharp, clear, distinct commands over a long distance. It's not like yelling at a football game.

.

It comes with practice. Do not shout but speak to be heard. There is nothing worse than listening to someone shouting trying to be loud. And most importantly think before you speak. In PLDC I stood ankle deep in water because the guy giving commands turned us the wrong way and could not figure out how to get us out.

Like the previous post said, it's all in the diaphragm. You should really be forcing the air out of your lungs during the command of execution (i.e. left FACE). Your abdomen should tense up a little bit. Look in your drill and ceremonies manual, they should have some info. I know AFROTC and maybe JROTC have some drill voice assistance sheets floating around. Hope this helps. - Nate

The comments are really appreciated! I've been recording myself to hear what I sound like and it sounds so stupid.lol It's like I do it loud but not strong enough. When I was in Army JROTC they always complained that I'd sing the commands.lol! It'd be like LEEEEEFT FAAAAACE.

Get together with me. Bring your running shoes, and lots of water.

You'll be good to go after 3 days . . .;)

TonyC's advice is spot-on.

Btw, MOST military do not have a "command voice" as they'll never be in a position to need one.

Oddly enough, modern-day Marine DIs seem to ignore the need for proper command voice technique as the "I overstrained my vocal cords so now I sound like a frog" sound is in vogue amongst them, apparently.

3 days? You going to have him run the crucible? LOL
I want to come play
Ooooh Rah!
Go watch Full Metal Jacket a few times or enlist in the Corps and enjoy your 3 mos of "command voice" training.

hahaha ^^ FMJ is a great movie :-)

Yeah, it's all about the diaphragm and projecting your voice. Also while marching, to make it more interesting, who ever is drilling uses a southern accent...Like instead of normal 'Left' it will be more like 'Laeft' ;)

Crosswind ... love your avatar ... how would Robert Plant sound as a sergeant major?!?! a bit weird, I think. Too 'hippy' and he'd need a decent hair cut first.

For what it's worth, an old RAAF "Warrant Officer Disciplinary" (akin to a Command Sgt Major ? Chief Master Sgt? in the USAF ... not sure ... the USAF seems to have about 25 types of sergeants) once told me that the best preparation was to find a lonely stretch of beach and practice booming the voice at seagulls and pelicans.

The other advice is useful ... don't shout from your throat. The "booming voice" comes from deep down. Don't try to be loud and overstretch - you'll strain something and end up sounding like a strangled goose!!!!!

Excellent instructional CDs

Check out this audio book. It is has great excercises and explanations and although it is meant for singers, it contains powerful techniques for any kind of speaking.

I appreciate all the help. However, I won't be using it anymore as I had to quit JROTC on my last semester of high school. I'm freaking taking 12 classes and there's no more time for that stuff.

Ouch Bryan^^ :( Talk to me on AIM man...Haven't seen ya in a while
