I'm not sure how many of you remember this thread from 2009:

So apparently, the gentleman in question has been on a misinformation campaign over the last year on the PHX/JFK route with, well, let's just say a 'heavily embellished' version of how I stole "his" jumpseat.

As a professional, I'm not going to mention the name or the airline he works for but if you hear the story, feel free to review the thread or send me an email.

Talking schmack behind peoples backs is highly unprofessional, especially when there are only a small handful of us that make that commute.

Furthermore, in my short time doing the union work, we have MORE issues with the jumpseat than other issues combined.

It is freaking ridiculous.......

I'm on a full 737-800 flying to JFK right now. That would be HILARIOUS!

"Doug Tayluh's on the plane! :)"

But on the topic, if people are going to talk crap, it'd be good if they at least get the story straight. If exploding neon giraffes and Danish-speaking marsupials came up on the version of the story that the person in question told my friend, I wouldn't have been surprised.

I've had this EXACT thing happen. I was trying to get on Airline A and both me and a guy seated were airline B, with him being a mainline pilot, me a lowly regional piece of pond scum..The guy was like "how dare you actually get to the gate early and check in without getting my approval first"...The moron stormed off 2.5 seconds before the gate agent advised me there would be enough seats for everyone...

Jerks like these are A-holes plain and simple. They are too lazy to get off their butts and wait in line at the gate so they get mad when you do.....what you are SUPPOSED to do to sign up for a jumpseat? Really, for real!

So what, now we all should be picking up the white phone and having airport services in say..CLT...call up airport services at say ORD put out a page.."May I have your attention please. Any pilots who intend to list for a jumpseat on flt # whatever from CLT please pick up a white courtesy phone and advise the pilot on the line in CLT that you were going to be waiting there first!"

This sort of thing is beyond stupid and annoys me to no end.

No kidding. I've heard the same thing. I DO think we need some sort of worldwide dialogue about courtesies, procedures and expectations should take place at some point.

Wouldn't it be fun if you guys ended up having to ride up front in the jumpseats together...

Awkward...

I almost think that offline JS priority should be date of hire period. It would ruffle some feathers at first but when the dust cloud cleared it would be fine as an accepted established system.

Jumpseat 101. Get there early, check in at the gate. Period.

The worst part is that there was a Cathay Pacific 747 boarding with a billion passengers, a British Airways 767 boarding nearby and in his eyes I was expected to run up to each individual person who may be in uniform or be a pilot and ask, "You may or may not have been here seconds, minutes or hours before me, but have you checked in for a jumpseat if you're not deadheading or actually working the flight? Anyone else? Anyone? Anyone in the gate area?" :)

You know what's interesting is that earlier that morning, I was deep in the jetway at Jetblue, another pilot shows up that obviously had higher priority. He started in with the "Man, I'm really sorry..." but I smiled, had NO problem at all giving up the jumpseat he had priority for, grabbed my bag, told him "Hey man, no problem! Don't worry! I totally appreciated the opportunity to ride your airline home, no worries!" and went over to the USAirways flight.

Nah, I'd just talk to him about professional courtesy, jumpseat procedures and how the aviation community is too small to go around spreading falsehoods.

Yep, that's how I always do it. But you gotta love those guys that get to the gate and meander around looking for the "perfect" place to sit. They find it, then park with a USA Today and read the whole paper thinking they will get the jumpseat because they have in fact made telepathic contact with the gate agent who "knows they were there first!"...I'd love to sit down to a game of high stakes poker with these tools someday..Me thinks it would be quite profitable!

I re-read the event from last year, now I recall reading it back then.

How lame!!

Damn, there are some big baby candyasses in the airline world. Obviously not all by any means, but the few that there seem to be, sure take it to the max! And even a year freaking later?!?!

Just the 's perspective here, but send him out a JC windbreaker and ask if he wants it in Adult size or Big Baby.

So... in subsequent encounters since the "unpleasantness," have people been showing up early and following the protocol to the letter? "Doug Taylor" could be the Keyser Söze of jumpseats. Sha-cha-chaaaaa!

Unless you're at a DCI carrier "non-revving" on a DCI airplane. See, with us, if we wind up occupying a seat in the back, doesn't matter if you filled out the form or booked it on-line through DeltaNet, it's non-revving. Then you're sweating it out until the door closes and the plane pushes back hoping that retired ramper doesn't show up with his family.....

Doug-

Occasionally when I have to take the red eye out of LAX, I make sure I am at the gate 1 hour prior with just a few extra minutes. When I get to the gate, there is never any agents there that early. To make sure I get on I stand in line regardless. So when the agent shows up, I'm first in line. If another guy wants to sit in a seat in the gate area, he obviously doesn't want to get on that bad.

If a guy walked upto me and said he's been sitting over there, I would tell him, "well then I guess you should have been standing here, in line". Theres a reason theres a line. Theres no take a number ticket like at the post office.

And if the guy makes a scene, that describes his character. I wouldn't worry about it. You know you did the right thing. Look at how pilots have stabbed each other in the back when the rest aren't around, if he's doing this in front of you, imagine what type of person he is when were all not around.
