I was waiting for pax in JFK last weekend when I see this 75 FO start his walk around. He stopped at the bag cart and spent at least 15 minutes loading bags.. When the bags were all in the door, he finished his walk around.

Was this an attempt to help with an on time departure or are you guys double dipping these days?

Last time I tried to help with bags in CVG, I got yelled at by the ramp manager.

Tell the ramp manager to shut up. He was probably riding around in a comfy car and he wouldnt want to break sweat and see the flight go on time. At least you were trying to be proactive. A good ramp agent never turns down help regardless of who he/she is.

By the way I dont know if you fly for Delta but if you do and are in ATL you can help me anytime. Thanks in advance...

Must be nice...Everytime I have tried to help to get a plane out on time in PIT I have gootten chewed out. So we just starting reporting every ramp delay. The ramp acts suprised when it is called in a delay. They usually don't start throwing bags until 5 min prior to departure.

I personally don't see what the big deal is about a pilot starting his own GPU or tossing a bag or two.

Okay, any ramp that turns down help when they're trying to load a plane is just asking for trouble, IMO. There were a lot of time (i.e. Gate 125 EVERY friggin' day flight 351 MCO-STL-OMA) where we had a full 737, plus freight, plus mail and TWO (count 'em TWO) ramp agents to load the plane. The way we have it set up is the gates are broken into two-three gate "zones." This was Zone B (Gate 123/Gate 125). This flight happened to come in right behind a departing MHT flight (so we were already pushing the tired mark), at the same time our sister gate has a heavy MSY flight (they're one their own with two people as well), and the supervisor for the zone and our "rover" (guy who floats between the gates) don't come in for almost an hour. There were several times the pilots came down to help out, and I was damn glad to see them and told them so. Once, the FO was throwing bags on the front belt loader, and the Captain was throwing bags on the back belt loader. We were THAT far behind.

There is nothing wrong with a pilot getting a little exercise! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I like to hear of things like that because it visually displays the teamwork that is already involved in getting a flight off. It shouldn't have to be done, but it is a good display of teamwork.

I was on a flight from HSV-CVG in a Dornier 328 and the captain helped the ramp guy get the bags on since apparently when more than 3 planes are coming in and going out of Huntsville they dont have enough staff.

Are you sure he wasn't waiting for his crew luggage to come down?

I often jumped out and helped with RJ luggage, especially at BOS and LGA. I got funny looks and once a ramp manager in BOS started a lecture about "How can we get more staffing if you don't let us post delays" and other nonsense.

My response shut her right up. "Well that might work except you always report every delay as a crew delay anyway. Here, bring these carry ons up to those waiting passengers."

She gave me a dirty look, but to her credit, she started helping unload the aircraft.

Yes, I am sure..the F/A was telling us on the loud speaker when the captain gets back from loading the bags everyone clap. I luv that Dornier panel all bluuuue.

Considering that bag loading is well outside if my job scope, if I got hurt I wouldn't be covered by workmen's comp.

What a pity

Although it'd be interesting to have a ramper come upstairs to reload my FMS when they prematurely disconnect the ground power! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Schnell! Schnell!

While apologizing for my moronic co-worker who did exactly that, I offered to come up there and re-program it for them. They laughed and wanted to know if I could actually do it. I told them "If it's a Collins or somewhat close, I probably could. Contrary to popular belief, we rampers CAN read." /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

He was loading.. I watched him for about 5 minutes.. He was busting his butt helping out. I took a picture of him with the camera phone.

Yeah, but can you do a 'manual dry clean' on the FMS? (inside joke for Flyover, MDPilot and myself /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif )

Well, although where I'm working now we only have 2 207s, 3 Navajos, 2 206s on floats, a Bonanza, and a couple of Stinsons, I do my darndest to make sure that the pilots don't have to touch the bags and frieght, and by and large they don't The big exception to that is the owner, who more or less helps everytime he comes in (usually in a Navajo or the Bonanza)
