Don't Do This.

So you're telling me I shouldn't have done that?!? Cause if somebody would've specifically told me... "Hey, don't be a <edited> when you tour a facility," I totally would not have done that. I mean it's not written down anywhere. Where are the guidelines for <edited>? How embarrassing.
Do you think I can still get the job? I was born for this. And my bother's, girlfriends, ants, second cousins grandfather, was Archie League. So it’s in my blood.

You do realize that 99 percent of the people on this forum don't know who Archie League is....

if you are reading this post and don't know who he is....google..

he's kind of a big deal

Yea... I was going for the obscure-sarcastic-might-need-to-look-something-up-if-you-aren't-serious-about-ATC type post. But hey... I've always been in the 99th. And I figured a higher number of us ATC hopefuls are. The rest can use wiki or google...

:)Welcome to the 1% club!:)

I'm heading down to my facility tomorrow to meet some folks and see the place. I've actually toured towers before, but it's always been as a nobody. Tomorrow, I'll be touring as a nobody who's about to be on the payroll.

Any tips from the vets about what to avoid? I'm a pretty personable guy, so I'm just wondering about stuff I might find innocuous but could really cheese off the controllers.

Thanks

Also: In before "take them donuts"

I'm not exactly what you would call a "veteran".... but..(call me stupid)

don't be afraid of how personable you are.. and focus on gettin those damn blips to go where you need 'em.

shake hands.. smile.. kiss butt.. i think as long as you show that you can take a joke you'll be ok.. i shot the **** with the KSTS crew a while back and they were happy to joke and talk as long as their planes were in line..

just walk in there knowing it's a serious position.. and the underlying psychology of this line of work DEMANDS sly, underhanded jokes that ease tension without distracting concentration...

knock 'em out!

Is the general feeling that it actually helps you (name recognition, proactiveness, etc) to show your face around a facility? (Obviously not in such an idiotic way, but in a more professional, like you actually want a job way) I'd love to do this anyway, just because I think it'd be awesome to see the inside of some of these places, but do we feel like it might get you remembered, or are the people you talk to on tours even involved with the process?

Yes...call the facility you want to go to. Talk to the ATM. Tell him(her) you want to work there. Ask to meet him. Ask for a tour. Get your foot in the door. Get some face time. Make yourself anything but a name and number on a list.
