Dog rant

So in prep for moving to India we have to find a new home for our St. Bernard. I put an ad on KSL.com and you would not believe the freaks that call me. Rescue groups "We do not feel your are trained enough to make a decision on who to place your dog with." Breeders," you really should contact the breeder who sold her to return her." Random people," Is she fixed, purebred, papered?" The last one sent me over the edge," We live in Tooele can you make the 40 minute drive here to see if we like her?" Are you kidding me? I am trying to find a loving home for my dog/ friend/ companion and they are too lazy to drive to come see her. How can you take care of her if you can't even get off your duff to come look at her!!! This is the most amazing dog and it breaks my heart to rehome her but these people are making it way worse.
end rant.

Why can't you take her?

i know..that was pretty rude of Peter.....if it was meant to sound like the tone seemed

So what's the scoop Shane?

I'm sorry you have to go through this man. I know it has to be tough enough giving up the dog, this must only make it worse.

I can't take her because of the: 1. 30 hour plane ride 2. 45 days quarantine. 3. large amount of diseased dogs over there. 4. tropical heat and she is a ST. Bernard.and a list of other reasons. I don't think it would be a good envrionment for her. She is a great dog and if there was anyway of taking her there and not being a huge amount of stress on her I would. She is 7 y.o. and it would be too much for her. As for the comment of she would have a better home somewhere else I wish you would explain your comments. Shane

im sorry to hear that your having to do that man. and as everybody else has said, im most defiantly waiting on the response to that better home comment.

The Breeders are right. If you bought your dog from a reputable breeder instead of a pet store, or the pound, you could return the dog to the breeder. I have no idea why you would not do that, in fact in all of the sales contracts of any dog I have ever sold, the purchasers agree to that.

Rescue group people can range from simply annoying to downright nutty, but they are the most skilled in finding a good home for your dog. If you have a St Bernard Rescue group in your area I would contact them.

What is so difficult about answering "Is she fixed, purebred, papered?"

And quite frankly, you sound like the lazy one to me. If you are unwilling to drive 40 minutes to find a good home for a 7 yr old St Bernard, I really don't think you take dog ownership very seriously.

I don't mind driving. The fact of the matter is that they call and want me to run right over to see if they like her. I do take the ownership of my dog very seriously. That is why I will not let her go to a home that thinks on a whim that hey a St would be neat. I don't even mind answering the questions about papered purebred or whatever. It is the oh I was looking to breed her comments from backyard breeders. And a little history of the dog s we got her from the pound years ago. So when the breeders who call and lecture me for twenty minutes about how a good breeder would take he back then why was she in the pound in the first place. And, as far as the rescue groups I ask again why was she in the pound. So when people call all high and mighty telling me what I should and should not do I lose it. These people do not offer to help house her they just lecture me about what an irresponsible pet owner I am. I will not let her go to the pound so that must say something.

Wow. Rescue groups I'd figure would be more helpful. As for the random people, it may be worth answering those questions, they may just be looking for more info. Who knows? They may still be able to provide a good home. Asking questions to get more information could be a good thing. Adopting a dog should not be quick decision, nor should deciding who the dog's next family is.

Have you talked to your vet about this? Sometimes they may have ideas that could help.

I'm sure you're not the first person to move to India and want to bring a pet. Maybe you could bring him after all, are you completely sure this cannot be done?

Try not to let these idiots that are giving you grief get you down, the world is full of idiots.

Good luck with this!

Sadly, I have to agree that leaving her behind would be best for the dog. Be careful about rescue organizations, because - as said before - some are run by nutty old ladies. If you decide to go the rescue organization route, I'd try to go with one that is breed specific.

Maybe these links will help.

Good Luck,

BTW... you know what's best for your dog. Don't be intimidated by the breeder or rescue groups and trust your instincts

I gotta say, I kinda agree with Pete. Wouldn't you want to hop in the car for 40 minutes and see where these people live and make sure it's a good home for the dog? What if you get there and the house is a trailer with a small lot. No place for the dog to get exercise. Or an apartment?

Yeah, your definitely making the right call here. That would be just way too much stress for an older dog like that.

No he doesn't. How the heck do you drive a St. Bernard around, be it for 40 minutes or 40 feet?
