does the military have anything for me?

Charleston, SC. Rota Spain, Desert.

I was stationed in Rota from '94 - '00. I flew back and forth several times from Rota to Dover, space A. Loved flying in the top of that plane. My wife worked pax service there, that's where I met her.

We always thought it was funny how some mysterious mx issue always seemed to happen while in Rota. I know that the C5 has always been a mx nightmare, but everyone in Rota knows that the C5 mx problems just always seemed to happen there. Although the crews would never admit that they were purposely finding ways to get an extra few days in Rota for a little vacation, we all knew the deal. ;)

So now that you are out and can tell the truth, what was the real ratio of real mx issues in Rota for extra time there, vs. just getting an extra few days to enjoy the topless sun bathing, sangria, and San Diego type of weather?

I'll bet you are laughing your azz off reading this too.

hehe...

well to be honest Freddy is very good at taking care of the crew. if you hear its down for mx, then she was broke.

there are some new stickers going around the system right now that say...

"Rota MX is the insurgency"

I had 2 engine fires after landing at Rota that accounted for 8+ days a piece. Had 3 landing gear problems that accounted for over 10 days each time. I kid you not, we where alerted to our plane, and the crew entrance door was missing. A reserve crew had to get home so they canned our door and ran off with it. That was about a 10+ stay.

Of all the bases over seas Rota was my favorite. I loved the weather, the sangria, looking at the local women, the steak, pattys, best damn ice cream ever, cuban cigars, coffee, man I can go on & on.

Then on base you get a nice theatre, MWR is wicked, swimming pools, such a great place. We 75% of the time got Officer rooms which was a huge queen bed, massive room, just a blast.

Probably the one memory I'll never forget about Rota, we where coming back from Turkey to Rota and I had bought a ton of Pistachios in Turkey. We knew we where down for at least 10+ days because of a bad landing gear so I got to watch the Sweet 16 down to the final 4.

AFN had the picture but no sound so the whole crew ate a ton of pistachios, had a ton of beer, and came up with the best commentary ever. It was just great bonding.

I'm planning a trip via Space A over there this summer with my roommates to back pack.

Ah, the memories :)
