I saw somehwere up top someone stated that you should talk to ATC. I fly freight in the south during the afternoon. I see some serious build ups and lines of T Storms..... when you look at a radar on a computer screen and the radar that atc use don't forget when they see level 3's and 4's that it is usally just looking bad on there scope due to the fact that it is topping out at 320 or higher. This will make any weather look worse than it is.... But going back to what someone was saying about gaing experience in this..... After a week or so of doing it you find out quick how to use your radar and also where to peneterate or when to deviate. I am always asked by atc "which way do you want to deviate?" On my radar it won't look bad and I end up picking my way through or just going directly through it. And 8 out of 10 times it will be a smooth ride. (and for those guys who are reading this and are thinking I am a reckless freight dog... I am not saying that I am a cowboy and just punch through anything! So don't take this the wrong way!) The best thing I can say is to REALLY LEARN HOW TO USE YOUR RADAR!!!!! Know the limitations and know what to look for. THAT WILL HELP OUT! And for the begginers don't worry.... you will learn... it won't take long.... it may take a couple of wrong devaition and rough rides but you will get it! Fly safe!
