You are in the right ballpark in when you are naming the makes of little airplanes and the era - haven't made contact yet.

The airplane pictured belonged to a man named Dave Powell of Des Moines, Iowa. Dave was a Board member of the Airpower Museum in Blakesburg, IA. Dave was a very nice man and was nicknamed "Polack". The airplane depicted won Grand Champion at the Blakesburg AAA fly-in in the early 80's.
Dave, his wife Phylis and duaghter Jackie (a good friend of mine - same age) perished in the crash of his Wittman Big-X in 1985. http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_id=20001213X34262&key=1
Dave's Aeronca LC was donated to the EAA museum and that is where you can see this airplane.
