Do you know your history? (part V)

OK...

What kind of plane is this?
What was the powerplant?
Why is it important?

I did not know, but now I do. Very interesting. (If you want to make it more challenging, you'll have to clean up the picture titles. :) )

Without Googling or looking at image tags, my first guess would be a Pientenpol Aircamper. Don't know any of the other questions (not even sure I got the first one right :) ).

Steve C, FTW.

It is a Pietenpol Air Camper.

Powered by a Ford Model A engine.

This was the airplane that made "homebuilding" popular - kind of the RV of its day. It could be made cheaply at home, and built as money became available (Got an extra $20? Buy the wood to make the wings).

Still popular to this day. Other powerplants have included Corvair power (in fact Bernard Pietenpol's last airplane built in the 60's had this). Also some have had Continental engines of 65hp installed. I would probably go for a Ford powered model as I love the radiator look.

The guy that lived behind us when I was a kid built one. Lots of fun to get in it after dark when he was inside and make airplane noises. :)

I am going to build one. Then I will work on developing an aerobatic sequence and go on the airshow circuit.

Seriously - all of you guys that want an airplane. The plans for this are around $250 bucks. The EAA will hook you up with builder/mentors in your town. Most expensive part will be the motor - but no matter which way you go I think you can be in a fresh engine/prop for under $5,000. Not sure about the costs for the wood, but I would imagine that for right around $10k, plus your labor, you would have a cool little J-3 like machine with a little antique "panache" that sips gasoline. Something to think about.

I think my neighbor had a little 65 hp on his. I don't know if he ever flew it. He also owned a sweet Taylorcraft.
