Do you know your history? (part IX)

Argh!

I spent an hour flipping through my World's Aircraft Encyclopedia!!! Guess what?? Out of 2500 aircraft - no Wiley Post!!

Good job Paul, how did you come up with that?

Google, coffee, slow day at work, and help from the FBO mechanic. We both didn't know we just kept trying leads. Since it was a Model A engine I thought it was a SkyScout or Air Camper. I came across Straughan, but I believe they did the conversion, as they are from Kansas. I then found they used a Straughan AL-1000 in the Wiley Post Model A. Found some linkage and I was gold. I didn't believe it was the Wiley at first because I thought they only made a monoplane.

Straughan made the mono. Wiley Post purchased the company from Straughan which was in Wichita and moved to to Oklahoma. I believe thirteen were build and the company liquidated at Wiley's death. Excellent job.

Oh I thought Wiley made the mono, thats how Straughan must have came up. Now I want to fly one. :)

Thanks!

I believe that the parasol that Straughan built pre-dated the biplane. Wiley of course achieved fame by flying the Winnie Mae to several records and did the first flights in the jetstream, once achieving 340MPH in the Vega. The Winnie Mae was also equiped with jettisonable landing gear to achieve the high altitude flights and greater airspeed. Wood skids, covered with metal on the fuselage protected the airplane on the "gear up" landings.

As part of the high altitude research, Post invented the first practical pressure-suit:

Here is the Winnie Mae:

Yeah, I admit my guilt of not following the Flyers too close this season. I'll see if they covered it...

What I am saying is they did NOT cover it, so there is no encore for you to watch. But if you've been neglecting them this year, then I guess it's no biggy.
