Since the last one was so easy it seems, here is one that is hopefully more challenging...

What is it (make and model)?

Why is it important to aviation history?

BONUS POINTS:
Pilot
Year (extra for exact date)
Location

1429-a.jpg

Consolidated NY-2

First aircraft used for instrument flying (takeoff, flight and landing)

Pilot was either Ben Kelsey or Jim Doolittle - not sure which

What do I win???:D

I'll take a shot.

I believe there were a couple of different variants, but it looks like a Stearman PT-13.

Some time after WW1 most military pilots got to use them as a primary trainer. Thousands were made and used to train pilots through WW2.

Sheesh there were not replies when I started my answer and now look. Here I spent 10 minutes scrounging thorugh an Airforce history book I have. Looks like I am wrong too. I am navel lint! Dang! :) Should have used google.

The Stearman Cadet didn't come along until sometime later in the 30's, after Boeing had purchased Stearman. Stearman, prior to the ubiquitous PT-13 had developed the YPT-9 Cloudboy which more closely resembles this airplane.

Hey, That's the Doolittle guy from the Jeppesen book that did the first hood flying isn't it? You know, back a long time ago.

If anyone hasn't done so, they should read the Wiki about Jimmy Doolittle. Brilliant and amazing man and aviator. Also the only winner of the Medal of Honor AND the Medal of Freedom. Interesting stuff. Perhaps the greatest that ever lived. Won all the major races of the day - the Thompson, Bendix and Schneider. He also won 3 DFC's and several air medals. The guy was bad ass and also had a PhD in engineering.

Not to mention the guts to fly B-25s off of a carrier...
