Do we have only one chance? GeoPref Question

I have a quick question to ask you: I got my geo preferences and I have selected CA state and Terminal. What are my chances of getting a position there? Or a better question: If this is my only choice, does it mean that FAA will remove me from their list if there is no job in CA Terminal? Shoot your thoughts. Thanks a lot.

If there are no positions available in the state you list, you wont get an offer there. If you want to be considered in a 2nd state, list it. CA is a pretty large state so who knows you may luck out. The flip side is, if you list a second state you might get that over CA. Hard to say!

Its always best to list two states, I was not selected for my home state, but got picked for another state which was #2 on my list. Only list a second state though if you are serious about relocating to it, or you may eventually back out of a position which could have went to somone who really wanted it.

CA is a high demand state. A lot of people on here try to get CA. If I where you I would put a second state. Because like someone said if there are no openings you won't get looked at.

Thanks a lot. I did put only one state. I thought about Oregon, but it is so hard to say for me because I do not know what is going to happen 8 month from now.
I know I took a big risk. Oh well, I guess we will hope or keep trying. I still have 3 years more to go before 30.
So, if any of you selected anything else besides CA, you my position :laff:

I guess I have a related question. Can you haggle over your facility offer? Like, if I put CA on my geoprefs, but at the PEPC they say, "Congratulations, you're headed to EMT!" can I ask for another option? Or will they say take it or leave it?

After you get your PEPC invitation, contact your HR rep and ask them to change it to somewhere else. That is about your only option.

Once you are at the PEPC...do not...I repeat DO NOT!...try to haggle with them. That TOL is the only one you can sign. You can sign it...or leave.

If you really don't want that facility, and your HR rep cannot place you elsewhere, you can turn down the offer and hope for a new one from a future panel. You can turn down two offers...EVER! If the third offer isn't good enough, too bad, it is your last chance.

To be honest, I wouldn't risk turning down an offer right now. You may never see another one again.

Actually EMT, is a great tower to train at. Beautiful Southern California weather, close to the big Southern California Facilities and it is almost a 100% check out, vs. SCT/NCT were you have a lot of the new guys just losing their minds working lvl 12 radar traffic right out of the gate.

As for the OP's question, rumor has it that they are no longer going to be hiring off the street, it is only going to be those with ATC experience. But that is just a rumor, I haven't seen any prove of that.

Yeah, nothing against the facility itself. I used to fly in and out of EMT pretty often when I was instructing at SMO. I just don't want to live in El Monte.

Uhhhh you dont have to live in elmonte?

I'm from SoCal and would love to go to a place like EMT. And i live in a nice, quiet neighborhood, not in el monte.

Haha, I take it all back! EMT is great and I want it!

Seriously, I was only wondering if a TOL facility offer was immutable; I picked EMT semi-randomly. I apologize to all the El Monteyites out there.

:D

:laff: Haggle??? If you show up at the PEPC and don't accept the facility you were assigned, you will be escorted out of the building. We had one person escorted out at my PEPC for trying to change his duty station at the PEPC so don't think it won't happen...

Yeah... that was interesting to say the least. I'd accept any tenative or firm offer they throw at me.

I have visited NVY tower today. I am in love. Gorgeous view, absolutely to die for people and great location to live. I keeping my fingers crossed for that one. :rawk:

I didn't get selected for either of the two states I put on my geo-pref list. I guess I am just happy to be selected.
