.....That being said, it is possible to just wear a long sleeved shirt all the time.

I beg to differ. Aint no way, anyone would be able to do a walk around in longsleeve shirt, plus jacket (which i required with the long sleeve shirt) in PHX, MEM, MCO, PSP, or etc... in July or August.

I fly with a bunch of guys that have Tattoo's, but none are clearly visible. You can see the tatt's on guys backs through their white shirts, and in my opinion it looks pretty unprofessional.
I'd look into getting the thing lasered off if I were you.

Wanna bet. :) I have tattoos and out of respect cover them up at work by wearing a long sleeve and a suit when I need to 5 to 7 days a week in all climates of summer. Yes its pretty hot then again its hot with shorts and a t-shirt also in 110 degree weather. Like Doug and some others have said some airlines require you to wear the short sleeve in the spring and summer which isnt good for someone like myself with a visible tattoo. I know if I choose to fly the airlines then I might lose out on a few interviews because of the the tattoo only if Im stupid enough to go to the interview and push up my sleeves. I have done a lot of research on this and talked to many pilots, some with tattoos and some without. They said and I agree. Either way you look at it and like it or not, people will be hired that have visible tattoos and one day some of you may be flying with them. That should never reflect on how professional a person is in the cockpit.

you'd be able to, but it isn't very comfortable of course....:)

Frog. You can either grow up or you're gonna get banned at this site.

Re: Does Tattoos and aviation mix?

Heck...I wore short sleves with my jacket in the winter at Piedmont. The flight deck of the Dash-8 gets pretty warm. Even on those 10 F degree 0430 mornings it only took 15 minutes to warm up the flight deck & then my jacket came off. Those damn Canadians really know how to heat an airplane!

Keep in mind that some airlines don't allow long sleeves with the summer uniform.
Wow, that would truly suck if you've got to wear the winter uniform all year round. If that is even an option.

But, I guess if you've got tattoos that need to be covered up, that's your only option!

But I still HATE short sleeve dress shirts!

Re: Does Tattoos and aviation mix?

Depends on the airline. At my airline, you're supposed to coordinate with the captain.

Let's just say that if you show up to a domestic rotation in the middle of July with you double-breasted coat and only remove it in the cockpit, you're going to probably stick out like a sore thumb and run into some guy whose dying to write someone up.

I'm still sticking by the "If you want an airline job and you have a tattoo, be prepared for people who may not accept your fashion" and "If you're trying to get an airline job and you're heavily considering getting a tattoo, don't do it."

Personally? Me? I don't care all that much, but statistically speaking, you're not going to be flying with me. To date, considering Skyway and my present employer, I have never seen or flown with a pilot with a tattoo visible with the summer short sleeve uniform shirt on.

Re: Does Tattoos and aviation mix?

Brian, I said possible, not realistic. :)

9E says no long sleeve shirt without the jacket (either the leather or the braided). I sure as HELL am not wearing both a LS shirt and a jacket doing the walkaround in the summer. It's bad enough in short sleeves and long pants some days in MEM.

Now, if you want to forego the whole 121 thing and fly 135, that's a horse of a different color. But, you'd probably be better off dropping the $$$ somewhere other than FSA.

haha, i was just being facetious. But i sweat like crazy doing my walking around in my short sleeve shirt and no hat in Minneapolis. I couldnt imagine long sleeve, jacket, hat anywhere in the summer
