Do pilots/crew hang out?

Okay, so I'm a ramper at an FBO and ive always wondered.. Do pilots/ crew members hang out with each other if there's downtime in between flights? Is there times when the other pilot is just awkward and you dont get along? Also, kind of an awkward question but does each crew member get their own hotel room (if the company books one)? Where I work, there's some days when a ton of pilots from the same company go to the same hotel and it seems like that'd be a ton of room... These are just some things I think about working on the ground lol

Yes and no. Some are awkward nerds.

At CFiscares old airline we didn't stay at the same hotels as the Fa's. Probably for a good reason. (Chicago 5 is now FLL 5or6...)

No, we don't share hotel rooms.

If we have a sit at an airport, I like to do my own thing. I fly with guy/gal all day and I need my space! We'll usually reconvene at the hotel and grab some drinks and food at the layover.

It also depends on the type of trip one flies.

This is an airline perspective, but I manually go through the bid package each month and filter out all of the trips that allow me to sleep in unrestricted on a layover or on day one of a trip (with a few exceptions i.e. there's an 8AM van one day of an awesome five-day).

Because of this, I often go for months flying nothing but trips that get into each layover at 10PM-midnight and leave the next day early afternoon.

So rarely go out with anybody. Not because I don't want to, but because it's quittin' time for most people by the time we get to the hotel. If they want to meet down at the bar for one and a snack, I might do that of course.

What I bid for two (but I end up getting screwed half the time because PBS only looks at the report time on the first day.)
People always tell me "but when you get in early you can go out and do things!"

"Yeah... but then you have to go to bed at 7pm"

Exactly. I'm a night owl and I just don't understand how anyone feels rested and ready to go for those 04:30 van times.

It's weird for me too, I can sleep a solid 8 hours every single night of the trip I'll still be crabby during early shows. My body just knows it's supposed to be asleep then.

If you're cool, we'll hang out. Maybe. If you're not cool, we might hang out. Maybe. I have a wife and 4 kids 4 and under at home. Work is my quiet place. I'm not there to be friends and make your overnight more enjoyable (not saying I would be the one to make it enjoyable anyways).

Very interesting to read all the responses.. I'm not a pilot but I've always wondered what it's like in the cockpit for a long flight and the other person was just plain weird / awkward haha
